2 TS instances (one running) on one server ?

nipper

We are starting to have some conflicts between TS Dev and Test of TeamSite. What I was thinking about was having 2 installs of TeamSite (only one running at a time):
/disk1/iw-home (TEST)
/disk2/iw-home (DEV)
both using:
/disk3/iw-store

I understand there will be some moving of config files to switch from one instance to another.

Just looking for sanity checks here. I understand I am playing with fire & will likely get myself burned, but I think it is a good approach.

Anyone try something like this before ?

BTW, TS 552 SP4 on Solaris 2.8

Tips/comments/RTFMs appreciated.

Not knowing what your dev setup is (number of users, how you use it, etc.), you may be able to set up a virtual machine on your TS DEV server through VMWare and then install a second TS instance on the virtual machine. You may be able to run both instances simultaneously against the same backing store - but I'm not sure.

** Disclaimer: I haven't actually tried doing this... it's just an idea. Since you're playing with fire, I might as well play, too! **

Why do you want to have two separate installations sharing a store if you think you are going to run into problems?

With the multi-store facility, you can always take a store off-line and then bring it up on another server.

Or, you could set up workflow or triggers to replicate changes from one server's store to another.

to Aaron, VMWare would be great except we are running on Solaris, it iw only supported on Intel platforms.

Brinko, I think you misunderstand what I am trying to accomplish. I have a dev branch with new templates, WFs, etc, and a Test branch of what is going out the week, month, etc.

What I need to do is switch between environments easily so the developers can work when Dev is running, but when we need to go to Test, I can control what config files are there.
Sharing the store would save disk space but not something I have to do. But what I am really trying to figure out is how to consistantly and reliably change from one configuration of TeamSite to another. This was one idea I thought of.

My apologies - I missed that in your original post!

You may wish to consider purchasing a development license, which would accomplish what you want cleanly (although it is not free). If you have already purchased one, but it's in use for something else, you can also consider a desktop development server, which is relatively inexpensive once you have a dev server.

You can find out more about these licensing options from your IWOV sales person or from our web site:

....and I'm not saying keeping two TS versions is a bad thing, just letting you know there are other options.

Lissa, you miss the point, we alread have a dev server. THe question is do I tell management that they need ot shell out another 100K+ (hardware, software, support, etc) to have an isolated test environment, or can my dev server do double duty, dev, then test, keeping both environments seperate (only one running at a time).

I know I can do it with backups and restores, which probably knocks the system out for a day between switch-over. There has got to be a better way of doing it.

If you already have a dev server, you can purchase a stand-alone testbed for 5K. This seems like a relatively inexpensive option, and you may wish to consider it.
