Following is my wft script. My external task works fine. But I get stuck after that. I am not able to do submit task followed by end task. Am I doing any thing wrong?

Check your perl script. How is it completing ? It has to return the value to the next task.

BTW, can you post the XML that is generated rahter thant the WFT ? It is hard to go through all the Perl to see the XML that should be created.

Most likely, your external task has not completed. An external task does not complete simply because the external program exits, it needs to perform a callback on the external task and indicate the desired transition.

What is the status of your external task? If you look in the iwevents.log, you should normally see the following series of events when an external task is run and then transitions the another task:

  TaskGoActive
  TaskInvokedExternal
  TaskCalledBack
  ChooseTransition
  TaskActivate (for the successor)
  TaskInactivate
  TaskGoActive (for the successor)

That confirms my suspicion that the callback is not being registered. Either the callback statement is not being reached, or there is something wrong with the callback itself. Please see the section "Troubleshooting" at the end of the chapter "External Task Example" in a recent version of the Workflow Developers' Guide.

Check your perl, 2 things I noticed, first if you execute the die statement you will never end the task since the $task->CallBack(0,"Success"); statement does not get executed. THe hard thing in these scripts is that ALL error checking returns need to use task callback.

My Perl script is working absolutly fine. I can see the database table getting updated and also the log file that I am generating looks good.

Even though I am convinced that its the $task->CallBack(0, "Success"); that is creating problem, I don't see any reason why it is failing!

Can some body explain me.? :-(

I get call back value -1. Though my callback statment is $task->CallBack(0, "Success");

Can you post (as an attachment) the code for /opt/iw-home/httpd/iw-bin/Ex_Approval.ipl ... You're asking us why this script has not succesfully transitioned to the next task and we haven't seen it yet.

Also post a screenshot of the job list that you are seeing. Is this on Unix ? If so do (from command line: ps -ef | grep iwperl) & post that as well.

Put a print statement JUST BEFORE the task callback, VERIFY IT IS BEING EXECUTED

My Task list is now empty. My external task updates the database table. As you could see the events.log (in my previous posting), my workflow is transitioning from external task to submit task and then to end task. indicating submit task is executed.

If the WFT you posted earlier is your entire WFT, it looks like you have not attached any files to the job. The submit task will submit all of the attached files, but if there are not files then it will not do any processing.

This appears to be unrelated to your original problem with the callback.

I'm sorry, but I don't see you attaching any file to any task. You cannot attach files to a job. Perhaps I am missing something subtle in your code.

I tend to agree with Brinko, looking at the XML you posted before, there should be a start task with a line like this:

<file path='/index.html' comment='task file'/>

can you post the entire XML file ?
