onSaveValid with callServer

Does anyone know how to return true or false when using the onSaveValid Handler with callServer?

Here is what I have:

function init

IWEventRegistry.addFormHandler("onSaveValid", checkWellFormed);
}
function checkWellFormed
{
.
.
.
IWDatacapture.callServer("http://192.168.193.183/iw-bin/checkWellFormed.ipl", parameters, false);
}

The problem is that I need function checkWellFormed to return true, otherwise the rest of the Save Events will not take place and my DCR will not be saved.

Is there a way in my ipl file to return true or false to the calling javascript function checkWellFormed?

Any feedback is much appreciated

I'm pretty sure callServer is asynchronus. You could set some global javascript variable as a flag (three values - one before callServer, one indicating not valid and another indicating valid) and have your callServer script write javascript to set the flag, then have your function sit in a loop for some time until this flag changes or too much time has passed. Just stabbing in the dark here, I really wish syncrhonous was an option on callServer too.

Probably the easiest thing to do is to create a function that "fires" the remaining events (i.e. calls their event handler functions) and saves the DCR (using IWDatacapture.save). Then, you place a call to this function in the javascript returned by your ipl code. I have done this and it is pretty seemless to the user.

I had tried doing this exact same thing before asking...but it didn't seem to work well (the global variable never changed even though I set it in the ipl code), so it gave me an infinite loop.

Not sure how you got this working.

My understanding is that if you don't return anything or you return false, your save is terminated. Are you saying that I should call a function within my ipl file that starts the save process over again by calling each individual save event handlers again?

If so, how do you simulate the triggering of the event so that the function is subsequently called?

It would be really great if this works!!!

You shouldn't have to trigger any of the events that come before onSaveValid, or onSaveValid itself, because those were triggered before your function. I think the last thing your onSaveValid function would do is callServer, then always return false. Then the CGI would generate FormAPI that calls a function in your DCT that calls the remaining handlers (the ones that should come after onSaveValid - each DCT that calls the callServer CGI would probably have it's own function that does this) and saves.

I *think* you could dispatch the triggers with something like this:

top._dcWin.datacapture_buttonframe.saveClicked( 1, "parent.getScriptFrame().callbackfunc();", true );

but I've lost track of exactly how this works and it's certainly not supported.

Well, what I did was just called the functions directly. So, lets say you have registered handlers for onSaveValid and onSaveDone called handleSaveValid and handleSaveDone, respectively. Let's say those handlers look like this:


function handleSaveValid()
{
    IWDatacapter.callserver(.....);
    return false;
}

function handleSaveDone()
{
    alert("save done triggered");
}

Then, your function that your ipl would call would look like this:


function resumeSave()
{
    //Call the save done handler
    handleSaveDone();

   // Save the DCR
   IWDatacapture.save();
}

So, your ipl would need to generate javascript that contained the line:
top.getScriptFrame().resumeSave();

Does that make sense?

Of course, if you're *always* returning false from your saveValid handler, you probably don't need to register the saveDone handler. You could just put that code into the resumeSave function directly.

Calling the other remaining handlers (onSaveNameSpecified, onSaveDone) didn't work for me. I attempted to just call them as normal javascript functions in my ipl:

onSaveNameSpecified();/ SaveNameSpecified();
onSaveDone();/ SaveDone();

If at all it is calling the handlers, I think it may be getting stuck with the SaveNameSpecified because if the DCR has no name, it doesn't know what to do from there. If on the other hand the SaveValidEvent returned true...then it would go through the logic of checking if the DCR had a name and displaying the dialog for entering a name if appropriate. But since that logic skip due to my returning false, I am not sure how to automate that functionality.

My workaround is just to call the IWDatacapture.save() function. It saves the DCR if the DCR has a name, otherwise the user will have to go through the manual step of selecting Form Settings and specifing a name before Generating a page.

If there is another way around this that you know of, it would be great.

I'm just responding quickly so this may not be vald, but are those the names of your custom handlers? Because if you have not defined functions by those names that would be the problem - I think you don't even need to call these functions if you have not defined them.

Regarding the DCR name, you could put logic in the onSaveHandler that checks the DCR name, if it's null alert and return false before callServer, then also callServer in onSaveNameSpecified.

INTERWOVEN callServer clearly needs to have a synchronous option...

Ignore my previous post, as I think I did do what you had specified.

The issue with saving DCRs with no name still applies, as when the user clicks on Save As or Generate it does nothing.

Yeah, those would all be issues with my approach. Sorry. We were auto-creating the DCR name via javascript, and we took away the generate and save as buttons. So, those weren't issues for me. Glad I could be of at least partial help.
