Capture exception of "broken" dcr

I'm using a perl script to dynamically build DCTs depending on some environmental conditions. These conditions (e.g. existence of subfolders) result in addition or removal of single items of the dct. The problem is; it is - without any problem - prossible to open DCRs with DCTs that contain MORE elements, but an error occurs when you try to open a DCR that contains MORE elements than the DCT: An exception was thrown: Error reading Data Content Record....
Now is there a way to capture this error; output some custom error or maybe even still display the DCR?
