According to http://YOURTEAMSITESERVER/iw/help/tst/formapi/formapi_29.html#SEC29, the answer to your question is yes. Note the caveat about VisualFormat fields stealing focus.

IWItem.setFocus ()
Sets the focus to this item. If this item is not on the current page, the form is first redrawn at the correct page. setFocus() will have no effect if this item is currently read-only.

Note that VisualFormat textareas automatically take focus when they are redrawn. If the form has a VisualFormat textarea, calling setFocus() followed by redraw (including Templating's implicit redraw on load) has no effect.

Returns:
Nothing.
