Using SDK to filter information

I'm creating a separate UI for our workflow creators to take them out of the standard TeamSite UI and provide a simpler interface for them to do what they need to do. I will have them enter their login info and then I want to display a list of branches they are allowed to work in. I can't seem to find the appropriate classes or methods that will allow me to map a user to the groups they belong to and the map those groups to the branches or workareas that those areas are shared with. Is there anything like that available in the SDK or do I have to use OS level commands (and CLTs) to gather that info? Seems to me that should be available in the SDK. Maybe I'm just not finding it - I am a Java novice after all. It's extremely simple to do in perl, by the way Smiley Wink

I need to find a way to get the OS groups a user is a member of in Java. How can I do that?

Since its an OS related thing, CSSDK does not have direct support to get this information. However, Java SDK has something that might be helpful. See the class java.security.acl.Group. Hope this helps.

I don't think you can have TeamSite so intimately related to OS groups and then claim that OS groups are an OS level thing and so we don't support that. Because areas (branches and workareas) are so tightly coupled with OS groups, you must also appreciate that users are associated with groups. Starting with a group I can find its members, which is what java.security.acl.Group gives me. I should also be able to find the groups a user belongs to. Don't tell me you don't support that - it's a huge part of TeamSite.

You might want to check out CSBranch.getWorkareaForUser. This method will give you a list of all workareas where the user has write access. It has a recursive flag if you want to search sub-branches. Please note that if your system has lots of branches and you want to recurse all of them, this method can be fairly expensive (high server load and slow response time). This is the method that is used by the UI to list "My Workareas" in the user interface (same server call as WDPro used for the "Workareas" button).

OK, thanks Todd. So how do I cache the results? Remember, I'm learning Java as I crawl along developing this stuff. Actually, the loop that runs this method will not be much larger than 200 iterations, so do you think that would be really noticable? We only have 2 workareas per branch as well. My test server only has about 5 branches, so I can't really test hundreds at this point. I would assume that creating my own similar method would probably be similar in performance, assuming I could even do it. I'm pretty happy having Cliff point me at this method since it's almost exactly what I was looking for, and I have tested it out already.

There is much joy here whenever I add more code then run my app and it works. It's humbling to start over learning a new language.

I'm not sure what the performance will be like for your site. You should run it w/o caching and see what happens. The call's execution time I believe is tied to the # of workareas in your system.

For caching you should look at the HttpSession object, and getAttribute and setAttribute methods.

If you use caching then the user will have to log out and log in before they will see new workareas that they've been given access to during their session. Also providing the caching logic psuedo-code would be a little long, so try it first w/o caching and see how that does.

If I'm reading you right, this should only be a performance hog if we have lots of workareas in each branch. Since we only have typically 2 workareas in each of our branches, this shouldn't really be a problem. We have lots of branches, but few workareas per branch.

I think it's dependent on the total # of workareas in the system, not how many there are per branch. I believe it's a linear operation checking to see if a user has access to a workarea.

Really? But it's a method in the CSBranch class - doesn't that imply it only is concerned with the workflows in the current branch? Am I just confused about what you're trying to say? I would think if you had this method based on the CSStore class, it would be more like what you are saying. Why is it concerned with all the branches in the system when it's a branch based method?
