JavaScript, FormAPI or John bug?

TeamSite 5.5.2 with Templating on Solaris, IE6 client.

FormAPI Code:

IWDatacapture.getItem( "whatever" ).setValue( result );

When result is zero, what actually gets saved to the DCR is a null string. When changed to:

IWDatacapture.getItem( "whatever" ).setValue( "" + result );

What actually gets saved to the DCR is the value of result (0).

What is result? A string, integer, undeclared?

This snippet:
"" + result
forces the value to a string, unless I'm getting my languages mixed up, which is not unlikely.

I am assigning an integer. For instance

var value = 0;

IWDatacapture.getItem( "whatever" ).setValue( value );

An alert on value shows 0, not null or empty string, which is what gets into the DCR (making me think it's Interwoven's problem).
