CSSDK / SOAP for Perl?

I asked a similar question before, got no answer.. I recently bought a book on web services and perl. I think we should as IWOV that they provide SDK manifest for perl use, similarly to what is used for .NET or Java....

I think I just got the same book: Programming Web Services with Perl - Randy J. Ray & Pavel Kulchenko.

Haven't cracked it yet - I bought several other O'Reilly books at the same time ;-)

As far as I remember the webcast " IWOV 6 Developer's Interface - ContentServices 2.0 SDK - Air Date: 4 Nov. 2003" did not say anything about the Perl part. Well I personally feel that a combination of Perl and Java will be good for all of us. Especially towards integrating with other technogies etc....
I bet there are "not many good Interwoven consultants" who are great in Perl and Java..I always see so many openings with the combo skill set...moving up the Ladder..Architect positions...

however, I presumed that IWOV, the company that was riding on Perl for so long, would, at least provide some sort of compatibility... And I don't think it's so hard to implement - just expose the services API....

The ContentServices WSDL, which is the interface definition file used by both the Java SOAP implementation, as well as the file used to generate .NET stubs to access ContentServices, is WSDL 1.1 compliant and should be usable through any WSDL 1.1. compliant SOAP/WebServices tool. While I can't comment about whether SOAP::Lite is a full-featured WebServices tool, I can say that any WebServices tool that understands the WSDL 1.1 contract should be able to use ContentServices, and will have the full range of features available to the CS2.0 Java client.
The CS2.0 Java client that ships out of the box adds some bells and whistles, but those are only to provide a true object-oriented API that Java developers like to use. Ever feature available in the CS2.0 Java SOAP library can be duplicated (within programming-language restrictions) in any other programming language that has a WSDL1.1 compliant WebServices toolkit available.

I just do not want to hear all references to Java. I am repeating - a company that still uses a lots of perl, should at least provide some sort of compatibility...

That's my point - given the heavy leaning towards Perl in previous versions of TeamSite, wouldn't it make sense to have some examples in Perl for us "old school" folks, as well as in Java, C#, and .NET for the "new school" folks.

It would be nice if they managed to do something about this for the 6.1 release - but given the current date and the expected release date of 6.1 - a follow-up (non-required) patch with example files for the various languages (it would be nice to see the same [reasonable] example(s) in the different languages to compare/conrast them with one another).

DISCLAIMER #1: I've written exactly two Perl programs in my whole life. They're attached. If I commit stylistic heresy, forgive me as a newbie Smiley Happy

DISCLAIMER #2: I make no warranties about the usefulness, supportabilitiy or reusability of this code, it's supplied as-is, to help you get started if you want to use CSSDK from Perl.

It seems that SOAP::Lite is not a very mature SOAP toolkit, in that it doesn't yet fully understand WSDL, but here's two ways to use CSSDK in Perl, using SOAP::Lite. For doc on SOAP::Lite, visit http://www.soaplite.com.

Note: In order to work with CSSDK over SOAP, you need to understand WSDL. (http://www.w3.org/TR/wsdl). The WSDL files supplied by Interwoven have a fair bit of embedded documentation to help you understand the semantics of each call.

METHOD ONE: (test_stub.pl)
Use the stubmaker.pl script to generate stubs for the various services. This makes your code a little shorter.
In the example, I'm using access and filesystem methods, so i generate stubs from
http://mymachine:80/iw/services/cm/2.0/access/AccessService.wsdl
for AccessService
and
http://mymachine:80/iw/services/cm/2.0/access/FileSys.wsdl
for the FileSystem service.

Here's the problem - each time you generate a set of stubs, it's called FakeService.pm. You'll need to rename them to AccessService and FileService, respectively, and edit the package declaration in each file.
I also had to do a global replace in FileService.pm to change the URIs for the methods to http://content-services.org/cm/2.0/fileys (see the FileSys.wsdl file and the namespaces for the operations defined therein). For some reason, the override in the .pl file worked for the access service without editiing the stub module, but it didnt work for the file service. Probably a bug in SOAP::Lite.
Once you've done that, edit the attached test_stub.pl file (change URLs, userIDs and passwords) and use it.

METHOD 2. (test.pl)
Explicit SOAP. Here, you don't generate stubs, but work out the soap calls from scratch. More tedious, but more flexible.

I haven't had a chance to look these over, and I'm not quite up to the point where I'm trying to write such code - but thanks much for providing a couple of examples. You should probably have these reviewed internally and added to the distribution as example files (unless some better examples come along)

Thanks for posting these examples. They look like very good, straightforward examples of how to use Perl with WSDL and they actually compile. Bravo! Just the kind of "baby steps" I like to take when starting off in a new direction.

Now comes the "hard" part... configuring Content Services to get past the "ns0:1 : Invalid SOAP key. Please contact support@interwoven.com for a Content Services SOAP license key" error.

I've installed the SDK and updated cssdk.cfg's cs.soap.license property with the number found in CS's license.txt file and tweaked the defaultTSServer property per instructions in the quick_install_cssdk.html file. After a "iwreset -a" I confirmed that the "fcgiwaspc" process was running.

Did I do something wrong or is there something ELSE I've forgotten to do?

If you've followed the two steps you've outlined correctly, you should be good to go.
The only thing I can think of is to check that the license is correctly copied in and that you have no trailing spaces at the end of the license key number, that might cause trouble. If that's the case, just fix the entry, iwreset -a, and you should be good to go
You could also check that your defaultTSServer property points to a host that can be resolved from the server, by doing a nslookup on the host that you've entered in there (basically to make sure there are no weird DNS problems).
Other than that, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.

The script now runs without failing at the login and reports all the info gathered by the getSubBranches() call. Nice!

Curiously enough, however, the name reported by the hostname utility still does not get resolved by nslookup and is the same name I used when the script stopped at the login yesterday. (I'm trying to do this all, client and server, on a notebook that's routinely connected to two different wireless networks.) Hmmmmm. And I can't think of having done anything meaningful to change anything configuration-wise. Even when I undo the tweaks I made in the hosts and lmhosts file the script still runs to conclusion.

As for speed, which some Perl bashers cite as a problem due to SOAP... The first time I run the script there is a little lag at startup then the output just blinks onto the console. Later runs don't show the startup lag. This is a bogus observation, anyway, since everytthing is running on one box. I'll chime in later (if no one else does beforehand) if/when the admins install the CSSDK on our 6.1 sandbox server and I can run a more realistic test.

In any case, the points of this post are: to thank you again for your script & follow-up -and- to advise readers that an nslookup-resolvable hostname was not required for the script to run in my environment.

The CSSDK is available as a part of the support contract for the Developer Suite that is a separate part number from the TeamSite product. If you have questions you should contact your Interwoven Sales representative.

Once you are authorized, you can download the software from the Interwoven Support Site.

The WSDL is part of the SDK.
