Regular expressiosn failes with words having ionly

We have an issue with regex in DCT. See the field def below:

<item name="Keywords">
<label>Keywords</label>
<description>Enter the Keywords HTML Meta Tag item</description>
<database data-type="VARCHAR(300)"/>
<text maxlength="1024" required="t" size="50" validation-regex = "^.*[\w]+.*$"/>
</item>

When our business users from China enters valid chineese characters in this field, teh regex engine fails to validate it as valid input. I know that I can change the regex to work around. But I want to know from the forum if this is a known issue with Teamsite templating. If YES, is there a fix for this?
