Copying / Moving Editions between branches
ddunning
We have a large number of editions in one of our "production" or live branches. We've been advised that having too many editions in any branch can adversely affect performance. So before going through the process of deleting editions, we would instead like to migrate or archive editions from our production branch to another branch. I have not found anything in searching the forum / tech library that would allow this functionality. Could anyone help with this? Your assistance is much appreciated.

Hi,
If you are on 5.5.2 then you have the iwmigrate CLT.
If you have a look in the Administrators Guide and the CLT Guide and search for iwmigrate you will see the full usage. Also I think if you search around the DevNet and Support there are articles covering this topic.

If you're running 5.5.2 (or higher) - the issue with too-many-editions-on-a-branch no longer exists. That issue deal with PRE-5.5.2 versions of TeamSite

I am using Teamsite 5.0.1. Unfortunately, I do not have the iwmigrate command. I've looked on the website for a specific way to do this, but have been unsuccessful. Any links that you can provide would be helpful.

Three choices:
(1) Upgrade to 5.5.2 (or later) - which will provide you with iwmigrate but also eliminates the need to worry about the number of editions on a single branch causing performance issues.
(2) For each afflicted branch ("foo") create a new branch ("foo_archive") and workarea on the new branch (wa_archive) and then for each edition (ed_00x) you wish to save (starting with the oldest one you wish to save), use File > Copy To Area to copy the edition from "foo/EDITION/ed_00x" to "foo_archive/WORKAREA/wa_archive", submit the wa_archive workarea, publish the foo_archive staging area with a meaningful name or at least description detailing the original source of the content), then repeat the process with the next newer edition (ed_00x+1) from the original branch, and so on, and so-forth.
(3) Use tar or winzip (depending on your platform) to dump the contents of specific archives to tape -- this will give you a content archive - not a backing store archive.
