Deleting Editions
megamala
Teamsite: 5.0.2
OS : Solaris
We have more than 600 Editions in each Branch. Total Branches more than 40. In order to free up some space, we would like to delete around 400 Editions in each branch. Will it be any problem. Will it free up any space after deleting Editions.
I have deleted couple of editions . When I see the History file , it still showing the deleted editions history also.
TIA

it's not the space, but rather performance that'll improve

The free disk space may increase as well, depending on whether any of the editions remove with them the only reference to a specific revision of file.
You'll get better space savings and performance (among other things) if you can upgrade/convert to 5.5.2

I have deleted around 100 editions. When I see the file history , it is showing up deleted Editions versions also(even though I delete that edition).

Well, what I meant that the savings would not be as big as one would have hoped, as editions are done properly (as deltas), unlike STAGING versioning

I guess you could say that editions are done as deltas - but really they more like TOC's or BOM's in the sense that they're really a series of pointers to specific revisions of specific files in the backing store. If an edition with the *last* / *only remaining* reference to a specific revision of a specific file is deleted, that specific revision of that specific file should be deleted as well (or at least marked for "garbage collection".
I consider deltas to be a list of differences rather than a list of content - which is why I wouldn't say that editions are deltas.
megamala - if you still see references to historical versions of files - are you sure those files aren't being referenced by another edition (or an old workarea)? If you're sure - you might want to run iwfsck (or perhaps it was iwbsck then?) on your backing store to verify its integrity.

We have found that deleting editions significantly increases our disk space. In fact, it's really the only way we found we can recover any disk space on our backing store.

Smitty - you are doing it on a regular basis - as such, you are more likely to notice a decrease (or stabilization) in you disk usage -- which is good.
My comments are based on a sporadic, once in a while, "as needed", attempt to delete editions - which may or may not reclaim significant disk space (depending on how many revisions of what sized files become subject for removal due to their last reference holder being deleted).

You're right, we delete editions on a regualr basis. But we have run into situations, more often than not, where our disk space still steadily increases to the 85-88% range and we need to get create space in a hurry, so we go in and manually delete a bunch more editions, typically in our branches that contain lots of large files like videos and pdf's. It really frees up a significant amount of space whenever we do that.
