Hi,
Can the Visual Format limit the charactor that user enter. Maxlength=200 doesn't work. Please help!!!

<item>
<textarea rows="8" cols="56" maxlength="200" wrap="virtual" external-editor="visualformat" external-editor-config="****.xml" />

Use a regex of FormAPI.

Hi John,
Thanks for the tips. Do you know where I can get more information about regex about FormAPI?

FormAPI is more complicated, but can do more (for instance, do you really mean 200 characters, or do you mean 200 non-markup characters). Let me know the specific requirement and I can probably provide an example or pointer. I think the regex would be a simple modification to that item in the DCT, something like:

validation-regex="^.{0,200}$"

yes. I want to limit the size of charactors in 200. It should not include the html code though. If a sentence has space, that should count too. Thanks for your help again.

If you want to ignore the HTML markup-code - then yes, FormAPI would have to be used - but you will have to write a function to strip out all of the markup code first, and then calculate the number of characters that are left. You can probably use something like:

// assumes text is the contents of the textarea
function getNonHtmlLength(text) {
    return text.replace(/<[^>]+>/g, "").length;
}

Your validation routine would get the item's value, send it to the above function, and then verify if the return value is greater than the maximum value you wish to support for that textarea - and then do the appropriate marking of the item as invalid, etc.

This isn't tested and something more complicated would be needed to deal with ML comments () but this might point you in the right direction.

function getNonMarkupCharCount( value )
{
return( value.replace( /<[^>]+>/g, '' ).length );
}

function handleSave( button )
{
return( getNonMarkupCharCount( IWDatacapture.getItem( '/dct/item' ).getValue()) <= 200 );
}

IWEventRegistry.addFormHandler( "onSave", handleSave );

err, actually you would probably want to alert, focus, and possibly invalidate the field and redrawlabels if the data is not valid. In which case your onSave handler should mark the field as valid before checking it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!
