Difference between classifier & recognizer

Hi,

I have just started reading and using Meta-Tagger. I searched this forum for a good answer to the following question but I was unable to find one.

What is the functional difference between a classifier and a recognizer? Kindly explain with an example as to wherel each one of them can be best used.
