Forking a DD

All-

My boss wants me to speed up the process of our DD workflow.

The meat of our DD workflow (external task) deploys dcrs to 3 DB's...p1, p2, p3 which each take about 7 minutes

The dd.cfg file takes information from the DCR fields and deploys them to the DB

Question 1. Can I run these Concurrently?

If so how? Do I fork?

What OS? If it's Solaris, it's easy.... Windows, not so easy.

On solaris, if you put a '&' after any command it forks a new process. This should make the command return instantly, but I'm not sure if you'll get any return data.

If you're on windows, I only know of one way to fork and that's by using perl's fork. It's been a long time since I've written a fork routine in Perl. Someone else might be a better resource for how to do that.

On Windows, you'd have to get into using the Win32: Smiley Tongue

rocess libraries. If you're familiar with windows process management, its not too bad. Otherwise...

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to that question. It's really a question of the "thread-safeness" of the deployment code. I'm not real familiar with DD, sorry. Anyone else have a thought on this?

You should be good. We do not fork DD but we run many at the same time. DB locks make things go sequentially
sometimes.

Give it the smoke test, plug it in & see if it smokes.

This was just a test
I plan on putting this in my parent perl script which will call the child DD perl script to run the DD (replace notepad.exe with my_run_dd_perl.ipl).

What I want to know is how I make a call back to my parent perl script to say "I'm done without errors" and/or "I'm done with errors".
