global search and replace

We've built a search and replace that allows users to s&r in teamsite, via a workflow that gathers all the information, then calls on an external perl task. This works fine on normal character strings (foo or foo bar), but I'd like it to work for code, too (<img src="foo.gif">).

The problem is, I'm guessing, the quotes - these would need to be escaped out. I'm using Getopt: Smiley Frustrated

td to capture the user's input; how can I make it so that it'll work even if the user enters a string containing quotes?

If the quotes are within the string you can try doing something like:

if ($file_text =~ /\Q$pattern\E/){
...
}

That might do what you want - the \Q is for quoting meta-characters.

Thanks fish... I don't think it even gets to the point where I could use that. Here's the command line call...
$cmd = "$iwperl $iwhome/local/bin/find_replace.ipl -f "find this string" -r "replace with this string";

When I check the value of $opt_f & $opt_r in the above example, I get...
$opt_f = find this string;
$opt_r = replace with this string;
...as desired.
BUT, when I want to search something like <img src="/old_path, and replace it with <img src="/new_path, $opt_f & $opt_r are returning null. I've tried inputting the string differently (\"/old_path, \Q/old_path), but my variables keep coming back empty.

Any ideas?

You could use something like HTML::TreeBuilder to parse the html code.

that way you examine only the text fields and not the markup

actually that may not even answer your question!

Try this:

$cmd = qq($iwperl $iwhome/local/bin/find_replace.ipl -f '<img src="/old_path' -r '<img src="/new_path');

Ideally though - you should turn find_replace.ipl into find_replace.pm so that you do not have to invoke a Perl script from within another Perl script (lots of overhead / poor performance) - then your code could look something like:

if (find_replace('<img src="/old_path', '<img src="new_path')){ ... }
