IE renames the filename with extra bracket!

Hi,

In my CGI script I try to force IE to download a file using MIME header type as Content-Dispostition:attachement; filename=testfile.doc.txt, But IE promts a dialog box with a diffrent filename as "testfile[1].doc.txt" how can I remove the extra brackets. I want to know if there is any way I can let TeamSite users dowload file that are not in TeamSite store. I have tested it with Mozilla Firefox browser and it does not add any extra brackets to the file name. I found this Microsoft Article ID 325630 for IE version 5.5 Service Pack 2. My client IE version is 6.0 Service Pack 1

Greg is correct -- IE caches files all in one directory and, internally, applies the [n] mechanism in the event that you save another file at another site with the same name. I'm among the first to trash Microsoft, but it's not an IE bug, per se, it's just how the app behaves.

Is there any other way I can implement the same behavior. I want to allow a user to download a file from TeamSite server to there local machine. I dont want to store the file in teamsite repository.

I think where you're getting caught is the MIME header you're sending. By labeling it as an attachment, IE's naming convention takes over.

If I store the file on web server and provide a link it does not put the annoying [1] charecters. How can I find the header information that is sent to the browser. I also tried not sending the Content-Disposition info to the browser in this case it stores the file name with "script_name.ext".

I've actually used that technique in the past and it's very simple. In this case, all you have to do is to actually concatenate the contents of the file -- make as though you're about to display it on the screen but, according to your MIME headers, the browser will not be able to read the file. For instance:



Content-type: application/unknown
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="something.xls"

DISPLAY BINARY OR TEXTUAL FILE CONTENTS HERE

I'm not sure that my Content-type value above is valid, but I'm not sure that it matters. If the browser doesn't recognize it, it'll prompt you to download it.

Hi Dave,

No matter what I specify the Content-Type if the filename=test.tar.gz then IE saves the file as test[1].tar.gz. The problem only occurs if there are multiple periods in the file name.

I'm sorry, then... there has to be a way around this, but DevNet is likely not the way to go, as this seems to be a MIME issue. You might even find the answer on the thousands of CGI-related support forums there are out there.
