how to capture exit code for the command iwodstart

I am trying to capture the exit code after executing a deployment. I am using the command res=`/opendeployNG/bin/iwodstart kap_test1` where kap_test1 is the configuration file present in /opendeployNG/conf directory. But I am not able to capture any of the exit codes like 0,1,2 or 9 in $res. it is getting populated with the complete result like:
Locating OpenDeploy service.
OpenDeploy server host: localhost, RMI registry port: 9173
Got OpenDeploy service.
>>>>>-- Start deployment kap_test1.
iwodstart running in default synchronous mode.
Need to wait for deployment to complete.
>>>>>-- Deployment kap_test1 finished:
ID: m110 Start time: Wed Nov 17 08:07:28 EST 2004
Status: Completed

Can anyone help how to capture the exit code for the command iwodstart ?

Have you tried system() instead of backticks?

The return value is placed in $? I believe.

Are you running the iwodstart from a script, then go through this script in ../OpenDeployNG/solutions/perl/iwodstart.ipl , you will get an idea how to do it.

It works. I am getting the result in '$?' but still there is an issue that for the deployment that is completed with error, I am getting 2304 in place of 9. The sum 2+3+0+4=9 but is there a way to get 9 in '$?' .

For a successful deployment, I am getting 0.

The return code from a system call (or backticks, for that matter) is placed in the upper byte of the value. To get the 9 in your case, divide the code you got by 256 (or do a right shift by 8 bits, which is the same thing). This is standard perl behavior.

You're reusing $rc for two different purposes - which is bad, though unclear whether it should cause any real problem. The code should be written more as:

...
my $dep_command = "$od_home/bin/iwodcmd start $temp_dep_config_file";
my $results = qx($dep_command 2>&1);
my $status = $?;
if ($status){
   $status >>= 8 if ($status > 250); # remove shell padding of exit status code
   # do whatever else you want here, now that we know there's been 
   # an "error" of some sort.
   # $results contains the information that was sent to STDOUT/STDERR
}

If you are always getting a 0 maybe it's because your deployments are always working?
An exit code of 0 means "success".
An exit code of non-zero means "failure"
