Testing TeamSite on Virtual PC 2004
NathansDIS
Hello-
I am considering installing TeamSite 5.5.2 SP5(and friends) on Virtual PC running W2K SP4 in order to test the migration to TeamSite 6.1. Does anyone have any experience using/installing TeamSite on Virtual PC? I am also wondering if I will need to use a separate IP for the Virtual PC teamsite server. In case you can't tell, I'm new to virtual pc too. Any info, gotchas, etc much appreciated. Thx!

We have not installed TeamSite on Virtual PC, but we have installed on VMWare, which is somewhat similar to Virtual PC. We found only one problem. Everytime we powered down the TeamSite Server and powered it up, the licence key would fail.
I am not sure if this will be a problem on Virtual PC.

VirtualPC is a product that used to be by Connectix, but was more recently acquired by Microsoft (
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/
).
VMWare is both a product and company name (an EMC Company -
http://www.vmware.com
)
Both products allow you to run "virtual PC's" on a computer
I believe VMWare only runs on PCs (and perhaps Linux?) and allows you to essentially run one or more other PC (or linux) machines as processes on the host PC.
VirtualPC exists for both PCs and Macs (not sure about other type hosts) - and also allows you to run one or more other PC machines as processes on the host system.
The major advantage is that you can have several variants of an environment (like a 5.5.2 SP2b, 5.5.2 SP5, and 6.1 TeamSite environment) all on the same laptop -- which is what a number of Interwoven Sales Engineers (and some consultants, and trainers, etc.) do all the time.

VMware exits for Windows and Linux.

Hi,
Even we are planning to use WMWare. Wanted to know whether you have filed a case for losing the licence key. What did Interwoven say? Does Interwoven officially supports VMWare ?
Thanks
Adam Stoller
I don't believe Interwoven has ever officially supported VMWare for its products - though a number of Interwoven employees have (and probably still do) use VMWare for their jobs - I think the general feeling was that they would never support VMWare for production purposes (which is different than what most people use it for - which is for development, demo, sales purposes)

VmWare will be for Dev and QA and not for production.
Adam Stoller
I understand that - but I don't think that Interwoven will *officially* support it because it is *not* for production. That doesn't mean it won't work for DEV and QA, just that it would be unlikely that it will be officially supported.

I have used VMWare for TeamSite, it was very solid but not really fast. There was a thread a few months
ago about it, you may search for that.
There were some issues with the license key but that was due to VMware not having a consistant node ID,
there are settings for that & once it was configured properly it worked.

If Interwoven officially might not support (will open a case also) then wanted to know if we use VMWare are there are any other issues apart from the license key that has been discussed. As said this will be only for Dev and QA.
Your experience will be of great help
Thanks a lot,

The licensing issue that you're facing is due to VMWare changing its MAC Address (Physical Address) everytime it is restarted. There is a way to hard code a Physical Address so that VMWare always boots with the same one. You'll want to look at the VMWare user guide. There is a config file that needs to be modified.

Also there was a thread in November titled: Anyone running VMWare? read that, it has some
suggestions on VMWare.
