Pass arguments from TPL to components not working

Running on TS 5.5.1

I have been trying to pass arguments between my TPL and my component, following all of the written procedures on 'iw_include', and so far have had no luck. I'm hoping that someone out there can give me something different to try, or somewhere to look at that I might not have thought about?

Use in the TPL looks like this:

<iw_include pt='templatedata/components/sum_grp_wf3.tpl' color_param='color'/>

In the Component, I use this:

<iw_value name='$iw_arg{color}'/>

And the output ends up being nothing.

Not sure why it isn't working, and I'm hoping there is a switch somewhere I might have missed. Thank you in advance for your help.

I have always used this syntax:

<iw_include pt='whatever' mode = 'cwd'>
${iw_param{'whatever'}} = "whatever";
</iw_include>

The component template then references as

${iw_arg{'whatever'}}

I do appreciate the response, and I actually have tried it that way once. I unfortunately had the same result (which was a null attribute on the component side). Besides trying the overly simplified version that the templating guide uses, I had been trying to just pass a perl variable iteration count (iteration="iterCount") to a component just so that I could access the correct iteration within the component. However the referece (dcr.repOne[$iw_arg{countParam}].name") always gives me a scalar of 0, and thus isn't coming through.

I started with the above because I thought this would all work, however I've been reduced to the simplistic "color" example, and now have to seek help. I appreciate any responses that might give me something to get this working.

In the Parent TPL :
