Multiple Lanugaes in 1 dcr

I have experienced a lot DCT's being created for multiple languages. So that when you need to create a language specific DCR you just edit the original DCR and save it as a new DCR with a extension as such as ...en_US.dcr or ...es_ES.dcr...etc. You then make your necessary language translation and generate the output file for it.

Well what are peoples experiences/thoughts in creating a "container" or 'super replicant" within the DCT? All languages are now contained in a single DCR. When generating the output I just have to do some trickery to pipe out the right language to the right file

What should I look out for? has anyone tried this?

Thoughts or any other threads I should be aware of that pertains to the same subject

I have only worked on two internationalization projects so I can't really back this up, but I would avoid this. One thing that comes to mind is that if it's all in one DCR then only one user can edit it at a time - it seems unlikely that one user would know all the languages. If translation is sequential then this may not be an issue. Usually each language/locale has it's own branch anyway.

I presume that you are just trying to internationalize the Input field headings:

If so, we did something very similar....

Our DCR makes an inline command call to a perl file. which prints out a subsitution tag.
We can determine the language we are interested in based on branch name available in the ENV variables (you could do it another way).
We construct a line of Perl to include a lookup module for the particular langauge

$lang = 'en_gb.pm';
require $lang;

the perl module in question exports a hash:

my %lookup = ( title_page => 'Page Title',
title_author => 'Page Author'' ,
title_date => 'Create Datel'
);

It works rather well!

I 'architected' a few systems like this ..As always, all depends on the requirements and the site itself (end, therefore, branching structure)...

In some cases we incorporated many languages' sections in one DCR - the locking is not an issue as in that process DCR was being passed around in the workflow.

one of the issues I think is the underlying encoding - sometimes UTF-8 is not suficient - and in this case you cannot simply 'save as' a DCR....

Can you give me an example. Where would I run into problems with this?

You mean the the <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> at the top of the DCT/DCR.

e.g., your encoding is GB2312. So all DCR will be saved encoded in it.
