Metatagger Sizing
dlagore
All:
I have a couple of questions regarding MT:
1: The minimum CPU sizing for MT on Unix (non-AIX) is 400 mhz per the manual, but what is everyone's experience as far as performance goes (i.e: I am assuming a 400 or 500 mhz. box will not do the job -- or at least, not quickly)?
2: Can you install multiple instances of MT on the same box?
Sincerely,
-Doug

Answer to #2 is no.
For #1 it depends what you are doing.
There are a number of factors that determine how large a system you need to run MetaTagger. Key factors that should be addressed include, whether the system is dedicated to running MetaTagger, or if there are other applications running on the same server system. Interwoven's recommendation is to run MetaTagger on a dedicated server separate from TeamSite server, as both applications are memory intensive.
If MetaTagger is running alone on the system, it is necessary to understand that any customizations of MetaTagger and the custom built vocabularies might affect the system's overall performance. In general, MetaTagger's performance varies according to a number of factors including:
1) Size of the vocabulary run by MetaTagger (number of terms and size of the training set associated with a classifier)
2) Number of vocabularies running concurrently by MetaTagger
3) Type of the vocabulary (A Classifier requires much more memory than a recognizer)
4) Configuration of MetaTagger
5) Configuration of both the operating system and the system hardware.
The following recommendation assumes two typical installations:
1. MetaTagger is being used exclusively on a system separate from the TeamSite Server
2. MetaTagger and TeamSite are running on the same system
And users are interacting with MetaTagger in a typical or recommended fashion:
MetaTagger on a separate system from TeamSite: I CPU, 800 MHZ 1 GB
MetaTagger and TeamSite on the same system: 1 CPU in addition to TeamSite requirement 1 GB RAM in addition to TeamSite requirement
Disk Space Considerations
Interwoven recommends that you make available enough disk capacity to handle all of the indexed vocabulary files and MetaTagger program files. The MetaTagger program files will need approximately 200MB of disk space. As a general guideline, a minimum of 700 MB of free hard drive space is recommended for handling all program and vocabulary files. To calculate the approximate size needed for each vocabulary to be leveraged by MetaTagger use the following formula:
Recognizer 2k per SVTERM
Classifier 200k per SVTERM

If you are on MT 3.1, 3.5 or 3.6. You can create multiple Metatagger server processes to run on different ports. We are currently running 4 Metatagger processes on 1 machine. We have a script on our TeamSite machine that's forks separate process to the different Metatagger ports.
