How to achieve "search" function in TS?

Rogerok

How to achieve the search function in TeamSite?

I am sorry that I can not describe clearly this search function because I haven't any ideas about that! I jsut want anybody can give me some examples about searching function in TeamSite.

I knew from others the search function needs the support of DataBase or file metadata, right?

Please explain to me your expriences about search function in TeamSite, Thanks a lot

Roger

Without some specifics, I doubt that anyone will be able to be much help to you. Are you talking about TeamSite users searching content that's being managed by the tool? Integration of deployed content with a search engine? Or something else entirely?

You also didn't say what version of TeamSite/Operating System/etc.

TS6.1+sp1+Windows 2000 Server

Yes, I am talking about searching content. You know, TeamSite can collect content and deploy content, but not provide content search funtion.

Deployed contents are usually integrated with a search engine?? I haven't this experience.

If I want to search content in TeamSite???

The search functionality that you're describing (searching on DCR contents and/or metadata) within the tool is not available in TS 6.1. It was present in 5.x, but was removed in 6.0/6.1. It's my understanding that it's supposed to come back in 6.5, but don't hold me to that.

Assuming that the re-introduced search works similarly to the way it worked in the old system, then, yes, you need a database and DataDeploy configured to use DAS (database auto-syncronization).

You mean, TeamSite has search function in old version, such as 552? User don't need to develop any other custom codes, he can use search function?

As I know, few users use DataDeploy, right?

Roger

Dwayne

That is basically correct. There was a lot of configuration work to do, but no custom code was required.

As I know, few users use DataDeploy, right?

That one I really can't answer. It's use is certainly less than TeamSite. Of the clients that I worked with, I would say that it was probably in the range of 10% to 20% that used DataDeploy. But, of course, that's only the customers of one consultant. I have no idea if that's typical or not.

So If I develop custom codes which is used to update DCR contents and Metadata into DB tables with DBI API, I have also the same function as DataDeploy, is that right?

Roger

Dwayne

I suppose, in theory, that's true. However, if the idea is to integrate with search, then it's more than just populating the database. The built-in search functionality parsed the DataDeploy and metadata capture configuration files to determine the search fields, table names, etc. So if you're going to go through all that hassle of setting up the config files, why would you make the extra effort to custom code what DD is already doing?

This is all a theoretical discussion, anyway. Because, as I said, I don't know how search is being implemented in future versions of TS. My information is purely historical at this point.

OK, I know the topic clearly now.
Thanks,Dwayne
Be happy to discuss with you this time and ....next time~~ Smiley Happy

Sorry again~

You said that the search is implemented in old version 5.x not in 6.x. So we can not install DD552 on TeamSite 6.x???

Roger

Dwayne

You can install DD 5.6 on TS 6, but that won't give you search capability. There is no functional integrated search capability in TeamSite 6.1.

The old customizations were essentially a form that you entered your search criteria into, and that then led into a DB query operation, which ultimately ended in presenting the results of the query.

The CGI's that did this in the previous versions of TeamSite were [apprently] not ported to the TS6 UI - but there's nothing that prevents you from doing so yourself if you have a sufficient need that overrides waiting for the next release of TeamSite which should, as Dwayne already mentioned, contain a searching interface - hopefully easier to configure and use than the old interface.

In either case, you almost definitely need to ensure that the content is fed into a DB when you create the content, so that the search function can then query the DB to retrieve it. Probably not the kind of thing you want to try and do without some detailed planning / designing beforehand.

You might try contacting Support to see if they've come up with a stop-gap solution ...
