Navigation systems

My team and I have been using XML to run the navigation of our Web site and in the past we have used database back-ends. What is "the best" TS solution for this. It seems that for us having these non TeamSite solutions is not using the system.

I worked with a system once that would create the XML to control the navigation by reading metadata on the various files (title, isNavItem, etc.). It worked pretty well. One thing I tend to avoid is having a DCT to define the navigation.
