TS6 / iwperl 5.8.2 / Oracle 9i

I'm trying to check out a few things in preparation for a TS6 upgrade - and hoping someone out here can save me a bit of investigation time...

Can someone confirm that the Oracle 9i DBI/DBD modules are NOT shipped with iwperl in TS6?

Assuming so - are these modules available from CPAN? from Oracle?

Assuming one gets the latest DBI/DBD modules - can someone confirm that they'll work with the Oracle 9i *client* software?
(We've verified that iwperl 5.005_03 with the OOTB drivers works with the Oracle 8i client software to talk to an Oracle 9i DB - but we'd like to eventually replace the Oracle 8i client software with 9i client software)

racle is on CPAN, but you will need some Oracle libraries/includes to compile it.

Well.

I did it the hard way, instlaled Oracle Server for the sake of ~20 files and then removed unnecessary files.

AFAIK Oracle client does not contain the files to compile the DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle, but it contains libraries required for the run-time.

Well, I tried to read the README files - but I'm sort of in one of those awkward positions where I am not the person who installed (or is resposible for installing) Oracle, nor any of the build tools (e.g. make, ld, etc.) - however I do have the ability to request that things get installed etc. I would like to make sure I know what needs to be done before I ask for stuff ...

So if anyone can help clarify the steps needed to get DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle to compile on Solaris 9 for Oracle 9i - I'd greatly appreciate it

We are also having issues installing the driver, though on solaris 8.

Has anyone been able to do this?
I have seen some comments on the web suggesting that the build of PERL may come into play (32 bit vs 64 bit)
Does IWOV have any steps.. I would guess they have done this?

I've just installed DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle 1.16 for the Oracle 9.2.0. (32bit).

It might be the case that not all of the libraries were installed during the Oracle install.

I've installed the 32 bit version and I do not think that iwperl will compile/link with 64 bit version, since iwperl is compiled as a 64 bit binary.

racle on Solaris with regard to the linker being used - /usr/ccs/bin/ld or GNU's /usr/local/bin/ld ?

Okay - I figured out how to get around the last problem: move /usr/ccs/bin/ld aside and make /usr/ccs/bin/ld a symlink to /usr/local/bin/ld (gnu ld) - now I get this:/usr/ccs/bin/ld: skipping incompatible /opt/oracle/product/9.2.0/lib//libclntsh.so when searching for -lclntsh
/usr/ccs/bin/ld: cannot find -lclntshAny ideas?

Well, clearly I fail the test about building on the same system as Perl was built on - the only way I'm going to do that is by somehow convincing IWOV to build it for me (and everyone else) ... which I may try to do but ... what makes this even more difficult is that the version of Perl we're running on our Solaris 9 [SunOS 5.9] system was apparently built by IWOV on a SunOS 5.6 system!

I am also unable to use the exact same compiler (for much the same reason that I cannot use the same version of Perl) - but I will next be attempting to bring over the same version of the compiler to see if that helps me in any way.

To this end - I'll ask again:

Has anyone here managed to build DBD:racle for Solaris 9 and use it with TeamSite 6's iwperl?

I'm not directly involved so I don't have many details apart from my previous post.

I think a response from IWOV would be great here - I'm guessing that they have done this and may have a procedure for it.?..

I guess I'm going to open up a support case -- this is the kind of thing that could blow a huge hole in our plans to upgrade.

Sorry - yes - I've actually made some progress here - but still running into some problems.

1. yes - we needed to install libiconv in order for gcc to work
2. We needed to install binutils to get GNU's ld
3. We needed to move /usr/ccs/bin/ld out of the way and symlink /usr/local/bin/ld [gnu] into /usr/ccs/bin because the binary distribution of gcc seems to be hardwired to use /usr/ccs/bin/ld *but* the makefiles for DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle assume they are using GNU's ld - which understands the '-E' flag.
4. We needed to replace the Oracle client installation - because they had installed the 64-bit version instead of the 32-bit version
5. We needed to copy over some header files from the Oracle server into the ORACLE_HOME directory of the client installation (this info is in the README.clients file)
6. We needed to make the ORACLE_HOME world-readable (it had been protected with 750 we needed to make it 755)

We can now build DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle *but* 'make test' is failing.
7. We needed to setenv ORACLE_USERID (because we don't have the default test user account setup)
8. We neeed [we think] to setnev ORACLE_SID
9. We also explicitly set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to ORACLE_HOME/lib (not sure if this was needed)

Unfortunately - the DBI->connect() that's used in t/10general.t (of 'make test') fails and we're not sure why.

Since all I need is a Oracle client, I do not run Oracle on the TeamSite server,
I do make install and it seems to work.

I think all I have is ORACLE_HOME and LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

I am able to connect and do some selects.

However we have other problems with external tasks involving dbd: Smiley Surprised

racle, thats another issue.

We have a problem with some external scripts.
When called from CLI the script is working fine, however when started by the workflows, the script does not work, it core dumps.

and core dumps trace to the oracle connection, so environment variables are not an issue.

I've installed gcc2.95, recompiled DBD: Smiley Surprised

raclce with it and see if it helps.

Our problem, when using it within a script, appears to be not being ablve to find libtwc9.so -- we're thinking that maybe we have to build DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle with static linking rather than dynamic linking ...

Try putting the following piece of code at the top of the script:

ps: and regarding the problem we are having with the script, I think there is a server side problem on Oracle. Since the script is working wine with Oracle 10g, but not Oracle 9i.

may be link it to the "known" directory. And do the same for all *.so in the oracle_home/lib.

After some tweaking with the oracle client files, I am able to install to DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle and connect to database but with perl 5.8 64-bit. My environment is TS 6.5, Oracle10g(64bit), Solaris9(supports 64bit)

But the "make" fails when i try to install DBD: Smiley Surprised

racle against IWOV DBI. I installed Oracle client(32 bit) for this and set the ORACLE_HOME to this new oracle. Is this something to do with my solaris platform?

Any advise is appreciated.

racle on Solaris9 with iwperl - 32bit
Oracle 9i - we needed to install the client software + some of the other libraries from the server install (as per the README documents)

We needed to install gcc and GNU binutils and symlink Gnu's 'as' in place of /usr/ccs/bin/as (and/or 'ld'?) in order to get it to build.

Thanks Ghoti. I'm able to connect to db with a 64bit perl, 64bit oracle10g and 64-bit solaris platform. But my make fails when i use 32bit perl, 32bit oracle on 64-bit solaris platform (even after performing all the steps mentioned in this thread). I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the solaris platform.
