FormAPI property for instances of a replicant

pawlr

I've checked examples, formAPI help, searched the forum, nada.

There must be a FormAPI method for this, just haven't been able to find it anywhere..

if I have a replicant named "sections" I'm looking for something like:

IWDatacapture.getItem("/sections").number

.. or something.

There's not really a built in way to check how many replicants there are, but it is relatively easy to access elements of a replicant. Here's a FormAPI example:

for ( var i = 1 ; i <= 1000 ; i++ )
{
replicantItem = IWDatacapture.getItem("/Replicant[" + i + "]/Element);
ReplicantCount = i ;
if ( replicantItem== null )
{
break;
}
}

Now the variable ReplicantCount will equal the number of replicants. replicantItem is, I believe, the pointer to the element in the i replicant. If you want the value, I believe you'd use the getValue function instead of getItem.

Does getChildren() not return what you're looking for?

From http://yourteamsiteserver/iw/help/tst/formAPI/formapi_29.html#SEC29
IWItem[] IWItem.getChildren ()
Returns an array of children items. Applicable only to container and replicant types.
Arguments:
None.
Returns:
Returns an array of IWItem objects representing the children of this item, or null if it does not have children.

So, I would think the code should be:

var count = IWDatacapture.getItem('/sections').getChildren().length;

Of course, you may need to check that getChildren() is returning non-null before you access the length property:

var count = 0;
var children = IWDatacapture.getItem('/sections').getChildren();
if (children != null)
{
count = children.length;
}

Hope this helps,

Not sure this is documented but I think you can use:

var children = IWDatacapture.getItem( '/Replicant' ).getChildren();

if ( children != null )
{
for ( i = 0 ; i < children.length ; i++ )
...

Thanks, this does seem to be a more efficient way to figure out the number of replicants.

Still, a count property on the item itself seems approproite.

The code above will probable blow up, because there isn't a zero instance replicant...

The correct code is

var children = IWDatacapture.getItem( '/Replicant' ).getChildren();

if ( children != null )
{
for ( i = 1 ; i <= children.length ; i++ )

I guess that depends on your religion - personally I like my iterators to start at zero, then if I need to manipulate the value within the loop I do that explicitly.

Actually I think your code is broken - since getChildren returns an array and the 0'th element of that array is an item, you should iterate from zero, then add 1 if you are manipulating XPath.

Like you said, it just depends on your coding preference / style. I too usually zero base my index's, but it just depends on what I'm trying to achieve.

BTW the code I posted works just fine...

I don't see how your code could work - wouldn't it ignore the first item in the array, and then reference an instance that doesn't exist?

var children = IWDatacapture.getItem( '/Replicant' ).getChildren();

// children is either null or an array of n items starting at index 0 and ending at index ( children.length - 1 )

if ( children != null )
{
for ( i = 1 ; i <= children.length ; i++ )
{

// if you are accessing children[ i ] then the first element of the array is ignored,
// and on the last iteration of the loop you reference an undefined element.

IMO, there isn't any reason to access each replicant object via the array, children. What can you do with replicant objects? Nothing. One has to reference an item within the replicant to do anything useful. Therefore I refer to the neccessery item via xPath

for ( i = 1 ; i <= children.length ; i++ )
{
IWDatacapture.getItem("/news/more-stories["+i+"]/links").setFocus();

getChildren is only useful for getting the number of available replicants

I guess I would do:

var children = IWDatacapture.getItem( '/Replicant' ).getChildren();

if ( children != null )
{
for ( i = 0 ; i <= children.length ; i++ )
{
IWDatacapture.getItem( children[ i ].getName() + '/field' ).whatever();
}
}

I have also seen a shortcut for this, but I find it slightly harder to read:

var children = IWDatacapture.getItem( '/Replicant' ).getChildren();
var max = ( children == null ) ? 0 : children.length;

for ( i = 0 ; i <= max ; i++ )
{
IWDatacapture.getItem( children[ i ].getName() + '/field' ).whatever();
}
