Is samba really necessary
drossign
Hello,
I'm running TeamSite 5.5.2 on Solaris and the UNIX admins in my company are hounding me about security issues with samba. I really have no clear idea of what samba is used for in relation to TeamSite. From what I've seen in these forums it looks like it's used to allow people without TeamSite gui access to edit files.. All our users login to the TeamSite gui to edit files. So, my question... Is there any reason why we can't uninstall samba?
Thanks for any help.
Dave

Samba's a very nice tool, but no, it's not absolutely necessary. There are a number of explorer-like FTP clients that one could use, instead. Besides that, I'm sure there are other tools out there.

Dave, thanks for the response. If all our users are accessing TeamSite through the browser GUI then is there a need to use any tool (FTP-like or otherwise)?
Thanks,
Dave

If you are using the GUI, then you can use launchpad to copy files down. You need to upload/download, but may
be using that already.
Check your launchpad settings, if you have it set to a samba mount, then your users will notice a difference.
Otherwise not.
If I had to guess I would say a majority of Unix sites do not use Samba.

We are indeed using LaunchPad for up/downloading files. When I view the settings (Edit, Launchpad Setup) I see a Remote Setup tab. In here are two fields "Map this local mount" and "to this area on the TeamSite server". If these fields are blank is it safe to assume that means samba isn't being used for launchpad?
Thanks for the help.

You are correct. You are not using Samba

One purpose you may find applicable for filesystem access from Windows clients: IDE use. If you have contributors who develop web-site content using an IDE, e.g. "Eclipse", they need filesystem access. And if they are working on Windows workstations, they'll want it from Windows. Samba isn't the only means of providing it, but it's probably the most convenient.
What specific security issues are raising concerns?

It's not so much which security issues are raising concerns as it is our UNIX admins always hounding us about samba on that machine (off and on for at least four plus years now). If it's an optional item and we don't seem to be using it, why not just remove it. Then we never have to worry about any security concerns with it. The fewer potential security risks we have to keep track of the better. (-:
