script to read file extended attributes

NathansDIS

Do you have a script that reads file extended attributes and saves them? If so, can you send it to me? I am looking for some examples of reading EA's.

FYI, we are on Win2k, TS6.1 SP1.

thanks

I have many that read EAs, but you really only need to see a couple of lines. Basically you want to run iwextattr -g with execution backticks and then parse the return, e.g.

my $command = qq(iwextattr -g "TeamSite/Templating/DCR/Type" $file_path);
my $result = `$command`;
my ($cat, $type) =~ ($result =~ m|^(.*?)/(.*?)$|);

I am not sure where or how you will be using this, but you could get this pretty easily using Java and the Content Services APIs.

NathansDIS

Do you have an example or some documentation showing how to use the EA's via Java/CS API? Thx,

I am sure if you look into CS SDK's Java Documentation, you'll find one. Sorry for being unable to look myself, my I don't have it right with me at the moment

TS 6.<something> has a version of iwextattr that will output XML. Much nicer when you want to parse out the individual EA's without multiple calls or dirty regex parsing.

iwextattr -x <vpath>

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE ealist
[
<!ELEMENT ealist (ea)*>
<!ELEMENT ea (key, value*)>
<!ELEMENT key (#PCDATA)>
<!ELEMENT value (#PCDATA)>
<!ATTLIST value encoding (text|hex) "text">
]
>

<ealist>

<key>TeamSite/Metadata/foo</key>
<value>foo value</value>
</ea>
<ea>
<key>TeamSite/Metadata/bar</key>
<value>bar value</value>
</ea>
</ealist>

Also, if you have datadeploy, you can configure that to run through an area and output an xml file with all the EA's. email me off line and I can dig up some config files.

Wouldn't it be really nice if (a) the usage information with iwextattr provided more full details of usage and (b) the CLT manuals actually documented these new flags!

The CLT manuals for both 6.1 and 6.5 do NOT mention the -x flag.
The 6.1 iwextattr -h usage information DOES mention it - but doesn't fully explain it, and there are a number of inconsistencies between the Usage line and the flags that are described below itUsage: iwextattr [-s attr=value | -g attr | -d attr | -l] [-f] vpath
Set, get, or delete extended attributes of the file
or directory specified in the vpath.
The vpath is in the form:
[//server]/archive{[/branch]+}/{EDITION,WORKAREA}/dirpath
-h Print this message.
-v Print version string.
-s attr=value Set to .
-s attr Set reading value from stdin.
-g attr Get the value of .
-d attr Delete attribute .
-c Clear (delete) all EAs for this file.
-e Enumerate attribute names.
-l List attributes and values.
-r <regex> Use <regex> to filter attribute names (requires -l or -e)
-u Encode/decode EA values to/from UTF8 on input/output.
-x Read and write XML with -s and -l options.
If no option is specified, attributes are listed as with -l.

[6.1.0 (33333) Solaris]
Also - the '-r' flag says it needs the '-l' or '-e' flag to work - well it works with the '-l' flag but appears to be completely ignored with the '-e' flag.
The '-x' flag works okay for reading EAs with or without the '-l' flag (though I find parsing the '-l' output easy enough), but I'd love to know how you can use it with the '-s' flag -- being able to set multiple EAs with a single call to iwextattr would save a number of invokations of the CLT and improve performance in a number of scripts I know of.

The examples below assume you have a valid client session (either running under Content Center) or have authenticated to TeamSite prior to beginning this step. Also, the necessary try and catch logic has been removed to keep the post reasonably short.

This is an example to get all extended attributes for a file:
CSSimpleFile csSF = (CSSimpleFile) client.getFile(new CSVPath("/default/main/<your file path>"));

CSExtendedAttribute[] csEAs = csSF.getExtendedAttributes();

Loop through the csEAs array to get names and values.
strEAName = csEAs.getName();
strEAValue = csEAs.getValue();

I fyou want to just get a specific attribute, such as the Template type used to generate a file there are 2 possible ways to do this:

1) Similar to above:
CSSimpleFile csSF = (CSSimpleFile) client.getFile(new CSVPath("/default/main/<your file path>"));

String[] arrEANames = new String[1];
arrEANames[0] = "TeamSite/Templating/PrimaryDocumentType";
CSExtendedAttribute[] csEAs = csSF.getExtendedAttributes(arrEANames);
String strEAName = csEAs[0].getName();
String strEAValue = csEAs[0].getValue();

2)
CSSimpleFile csSF = (CSSimpleFile) client.getFile(new CSVPath("/default/main/<your file path>"));
InputStreamReader in = new InputStreamReader(csSF.getExtendedAttributeInputStream("TeamSite/Templating/PrimaryDocumentType", false), "UTF8");

int ch;
String strEAValue = "";

while ((ch = in.read()) > -1) {
strEAValue += ((char)ch);
}

in.close();

Keep in mind that this code will not handle Internationalized extended attribute values correctly. If you intend to use Perl, you must use additional switches for the contents of the Extended Attribute to be read back out correctly.

NathansDIS

Thanks for the example, this is great! What other types of things do you use CSF for? We just recently started using it to automatically upload our .dll libraries to TeamSite whenever a build is completed and approved.

We have augmented the out of the box TS interface by adding some servlets, JSPs, custom tag libraries, etc. We have also written a few custom portlets to provide user information and access to OpenDeploy GUI, TS Admin GUI, DataDeploy GUI, etc.

Has anyone figured out how to use the iwextattr -x with the -s flag to set the EAs using the XML file? Extracting the EAs is fine, it's just making sense of the -s flag?!?

patrickm

Adam Stoller

If you use -x with -l you'll see the DTD which needs to be used when using it with -s:<!DOCTYPE ealist
[
<!ELEMENT ealist (ea)*>
<!ELEMENT ea (key, value*)>
<!ELEMENT key (#PCDATA)>
<!ELEMENT value (#PCDATA)>
<!ATTLIST value encoding (text|hex) "text">
]
>Thus if you create an XML file (or XML string) like:<ealist>
<ea><key>EAKey1</key><value>EAValue1</value></ea>
<ea><key>EAKey2</key><value>EAValue2</value></ea>
<ea><key>EAKey3</key>
<value>EAValue3a</value>
<value>EAValue3b</value>
</ea>
</ealist>and feed it to/through iwextattr -s -x it should do what you want.
