External Task Not Executing

Now that the GUI is back-up, I have found that external tasks executed from workflows are not getting run. This was working fine before our problem of the GUI not starting up appeared. Basically, anytime an external task is called, it hangs. I placed some simple code at the top of an external task to write some output to a temp file and it is not getting executed. If I do an iwcallback taskid, it by-passes that external task and hangs at the next one. Any ideas how to trouble shoot?

Is there anything in any of the various log files to indicate that it attempted to run the scripts and/or what kind of failure occurred?
Are you sure the scripts are executable? Do they have the correct path to iwperl in the #! line? Is iwperl installed correctly, accessible, and executable?

No errors in any log files. The only log entry I see is in iwevents.log:

In this case, I have tried to use the sample external task that came with Teamsite 6.1. The xml file gets generated from the sample workflow, but the external task is not getting inititated. I also put the following code into the script sample_external_task.ipl (which is the external task):

and am getting no output.

Perl is accessible and executable as is iwperl. iwperl is referenced correctly in the #! line.

When the externaltask seems to hang - have you looked at the data available through iwgetwfobj for that taskid?

If you can replicate the problem - before you just bypass the task with iwcallback - please run iwgetwfobj on the taskid and post the results.

Even though it appears you are using the sample external job, try running it from the command line. I have seen
too many cases when there was a problem in the perl that prevented it from running.

Don't use any parameters, you should see something like this:

(many uninitialized errors)
some usage stuff,

Task 0 does not exist.
ERROR:00920: Object being looked up was not found

If TeamSite is on solaris then check to make sure if iwprocessd daemon is running or not.

This looks good - I wanted to verify that you weren't in one of those waiting-for-locks type hanging situations - which you do not appear to be.

Can you post (preferably as an attachment) your copy of sample_external_task.ipl (it's best we look at what you actually have rather than each of us looking at our own copy - since it's possibly that your copy got munged or modified)?

I have attached the wft and ipl files as well as the output of the command line run. However, I do not see the iwprocessd running. But, the iwprocessd.log file does get updates when I restart iw.server:

Well, the last full system re-boot seems to of started iwprocessd. The External tasks are running again. Very strange that is didn't come up during the last re-boot yesterday.

Anyhow, all is back up, thanks!
