Teamsite Backing Store Conversion
mintymoss
Has anyone any experience of using iwconvert cross platform, i.e. converting a backing store residing on a solaris box to a windows Teamsite install. Basically we'd like to know if it's possible and are there any specific issues we should be wary of.
Thanks
MM

It's completely unsupported and I believe that it won't work at all (the two are not always the same thing)
Consider that each of the OS's involved have their own very separate, very different way of dealing with file ownership and group sharing priveleges, as well as how to define users and groups -- so right off the bat all that kind of information related to each asset in the backing store would basically get trashed.
Then of course there may be issues with path-separators ('/' vs '\') or more likely case sensitivity (unix is, windows isn't), etc.
It's not a pretty picture. Probably the best thing you could do is to take a cut of an edition (tar, zip, whatever) and a copy of all the EAs extracted from each of the files in that edition (there are scripts aplenty around these forums, this site and/or the support site) - and then create a fresh backing store on the new platform - dump in the contents, set the the EAs and move forward from there - leaving all historical information on the old server until you're willing to shut it off.

One other option in addition to what Fish mentioned is to use Opendeploy 6 for deploying both files and extended attributes from the old to the new backing store. Configure Opendeploy to deploy files from Workarea or Edition to the new backing store branch. You can set the permission on the files/directories during deployment.

The use of OD 6 may depend on what versions of TeamSite are involved. I'm not sure if the EA handling of OD6 works with versions of TeamSite prior to 6.0 and it's pretty likely that if it works for TeamSite 5.5.2 it might not work for any version of TeamSite prior to that...
