Why Portals need Powerful Content Management?
sunil_j
Hi Experts,
Can we discuss why Portal implementations need separate Content Management Systems like TeamSite and what may be the potential pros and cons of using or NOT using inbuilt Content Management Servers from Portal vendors?
Generally customers deploying Portal solutions have inbuilt CMS OOTB and they wouldn't be needing a specific CMS lke TeamSite as because of so many reasons (quite obvious: TeamSite Very expensive...).

Hey Sunil
Few things that are very obviuos:
Size of the content
People spread over location: need collaboration
Frequency of updates
Content put on the sites needs to be valid and requires strong control mechanism
Need for non Technical Users to be able to update content on the portal
These are quite a few reason why would you need TeamSite

I think some portal solutions actually includes a collaboration server with basic version control mechanisms.
It looks like Portal solutions companies are coming over to the "content management" arena. i.e. packaging their own version of content managment to portal solutions.
Taking Plumtree 6 for example:
Size of the content - yes (TS may perform better)
People spread over location: need collaboration - Portal solution with SSO / remote user login
Frequency of updates - yes (TS may perform better)
Content put on the sites needs to be valid and requires strong control mechanism - basic, no workflow
Need for non Technical Users to be able to update content on the portal - yes
Meta data "tags" - none in Plumtree
Disadvantages of TS:
- User acceptance - try to explain to a user what is Workarea/Staging ... to them they are just directories.
As you can see Portal solution vendors are merging the gap of pure portal solutions. I guess Portal vendors realize that most clients need/want to implement some sort of KM without the hassle of integration.

Also these days companies want best solutions for each application domain.. not a complete solution from one company.
Thatz why you would see IBM teamed up with Interwoven to provide The Best solution that includes strong content managment capabilities of TeamSite clubbed with IBM TeamTurbo that enables virtualization of teamsite workareas. Integration with Websphere portal server.
And also hardware for business ranging from medium to large scale.
