iw tags in tpl create too much white space

Tim__D

I'm using iw_iterate to loop through replicant elements to buld a Dymanic .js Menu. The resulting page contains about 5.6 k of white space where I have a lot of this type of thing going on and I'd like to remove it. Anyone got any ideas on a simple solution?

Can you show us the PT?
One solution would be to use a primarily Perl-baed PT.
Another solution would be to use iw_ostream and filter the buffer before outputting it.

I've noticed that as well. The best solution I've come up with is to eliminate the whitespace in your presentation template. It makes it a bit uglier, but otherwise you end up with whitespace as you've seen.

Interwoven, this is a common problem. Something along what's described here might help.

http://devnet.interwoven.com/forums/cgi-bin/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=PRODUCTS_TEMPLATING&Number=40440&Search=true&Forum=All_Forums&Words=iwpt_set_ostream&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=40412

or maybe more simple and perlish (untested all) in an iw-perl at the end of the TPL:

sub cleanHTML( $ )
{
s#^\s+$##mgi;
}

iwpt_set_ostream_data( 'default', cleanHTML( iwpt_get_ostream_data( 'default' )));

Tim__D

Here is one block:

<iw_iterate list="this_dcr.Level 1" var="Level_1" iteration="Level_1_Count">
<iw_if expr="{iw_value name='Level_1.Name'/} ne ''">
<iw_then>
<iw_perl>
# Count Level 1 replicants
$intLevel1Count = $Level_1_Count;
</iw_perl>
</iw_then>
</iw_if>
</iw_iterate>

Adam Stoller

I'm not entirely sure what this code is trying to do - but it appears that you could replace the XML version of the code with something like:my @Level_1 = iwpt_dcr_list('this_dcr.Level 1');
my $intLevel1Count = 0;
for (my $i = 0; $i < @Level_1; $i++){
$intLevel1Count = $i if (iwpt_dcr_value("$Level_1[$i].Name") ne "");
}However, it isn't clear to me that you want to set $intLevel1Count to $i but rather to increment $intLevel1Count by 1 each time you find a level1 element whose Name element is not empty.

Regardless - this section of code does not output anything and therefore it makes sense to just use Perl here (IMO) - but I believe you could do a similar thing by using iw_ostream elements (haven't used them much myself, so I can't just rattle it off - sorry)

Tim__D

Thanks for the Tip. I had to use slightly different syntax the above did not work for me but I have replaced the whole lot with 150 lines of iw_perl to achieve exactly the same thing with no white space Smiley Sad

I hope they fix this. Its not said anywhere that iw_tags are for output only?

foreach my $Level_1 (iwpt_dcr_list('this_dcr.Level 1')) {
$level_1Ctr++;
}

Adam Stoller

It's not that the iw_tags are for output only - but that, by default, all text (outside the iw_perl tags) is passed along verbatim to the generated output - and this incldues all the white-space caused by XML elements that get evaluated into white-space as part of the process.

You can use the XML format with the iw_ostream tags to capture all the generated information and process it before sending to the actual output ... however, since I'm rather comfortable with writing Perl code - I usually just write my PTs *as* Perl and circumvent the entire problem.

We use an Ostream.
Wrap the following around the entire PT.

<iw_ostream filter="Fidelity: Smiley Surprised

Stream::Filter: Smiley Tongue

****_page()">

</iw_ostream>

Anything in tihs tag is passed to the specified routine in $_
The example below removes completely empty lines and strips out tabs.
Hope it helps.

sub parse_page {

my $data = $_;

# Strip all whitespace from the front of the doc.
$data =~ s/(\s*?)</</;

$data =~ s/\t//g;

# Strip anything after

$data =~ s/<\/html>(.*)/<\/html>\n/s;

my @lines = split(/\n/,$data);
$data = "";

foreach my $line (@lines) {
if(length($line) > 0) {
$data="$data$line\n";
}
}

$_ = $data;
}

Adam Stoller

Cool - that sounds about right - thanks for posting it.
I think you could write that more simply as:sub parse_page {
local $_ = shift;
# Strip all whitespace from the front of the doc
s|^\s*<|<|;
s|\t||gs;
# Strip anything after

s|(
).*|$1|s;
# Remove empty lines
s|\n\n|\n|gs;
$_;
}The first line makes the rest of the lines simpler to write since all the operations will act on $_ by default.

I anchored the 2nd line to the beginning of the string (to match the comment) and remove the parens which I don't believe are required.

I added the 's' modifier to the 3rd line as I'm guessing you wanted to apply it globally across newlines embedded within the string - yes?

The 4th line is a bit more straight forward (IMO) than what you had - as you're not interested in keeping the trailing text, only the tag - and by using a different delimeter than / you don't have to escape the one in the pattern.

The 5th line is, I believe, a simpler way of doing what you were doing with split/loop.

The last line is necessary to return the modified string (you could preface it with return but you don't need to).

I have to admit though, I haven't actually tried the above in a PT.

Clearly there was a disconnect here. I suggest you write the entire PT in Perl - then, instead of outputing each piece of content as you access it, append it to a variable (this could use up a decent chunk of memory depending on the size of the generated page) - then, output the page by passing it through the previously mentioned subroutine.

If you use the XML tags - I believe that every line of XML corresponds to a blank line in the output file.

Hi all,

To me this seems like a real problem with templating (sorry, forms publishing). You shouldn't have to rely on being a Perl expert to produce your presentation templates (as it happens I'm very familiar with it so doesn't always affect me). You should be able to use the IW tags and not have to worry about lots of spurious white space, that does in fact affect the layout of the generated html.

Also, I shouldn't need to use ostream, since this automatically means two files are generated every time, confusing everyone involved.

I think there should be an option when generating a page for TS to scan the generated content and remove white space. Could be a setting as part of templating.cfg.

My two pennies worth anyway!

Cheers

>> Also, I shouldn't need to use ostream, since this automatically means two files are generated every time, confusing everyone involved.

What do you mean by this? You *can* use an ostream tag to generate separate files, but the example I gave earlier in the thread just passes everything in the ostream tag into a perl function and the returned result is written to stdout (the file that you are generating).

Thanks.
Darren

If you write all (or most all) of your XML in one-line you'll probably get the results you're looking for. Basically any white-space in the PT (that isn't contained within an iw_perl tag) is translated to the equivalent white-space in the generated file - this includes newlines.

So - instead of writing something like: <iw_if expr='{iw_value name="$gsi"} ne {iw_value name="$gso"} '>
<iw_then>
<iw_value name='size_of_company_list'/>,
</iw_then>
<iw_else>
<iw_value name='size_of_company_list'/>
</iw_else>
</iw_if>Try:

     <iw_if expr='{iw_value name="$gsi"} ne {iw_value name="$gso"} '><iw_then><iw_value name='size_of_company_list'/>,</iw_then><iw_else><iw_value name='size_of_company_list'/></iw_else></iw_if>

And see if that does what you want (admittedly not the way you want to write it, but ...)

Hi,

I've used the ostream tag to some success, thanks for that sugestion (I'd never looked too closely at the different options available in ostream before).

I've got it working where the filter attribute (a perl sub) is contained in the same tpl, but ideally I'd want it in a separate module, so that all my templates could use it.

I've got the following so far...

use lib "y:\\iw-mount\\default\\main\\wwwsites\\br_RetailCommon\\WORKAREA\\wk_RetailCommon\\presentation\\tpl\\";
use commonPresentationRoutines;

The first line on it's own allows the compilation and generation of the page, but when I introduce the second line, it errors. I only get the 'unable to process template' error (i've no way of debugging any further really). Does anyone know what might be wrong? I've used this same process for another file in another location (although it was the d: drive of the server, rather than the y: drive.

Any suggestions/thoughts would be most welcome.

Cheers

Hi Alan,

First up did you know you can use forward slashes in your use lib statement:

use lib 'y:/path/to/folder/containing/perl/mods';

It makes no difference to how the code works, but looks a bit neater Smiley Happy

As far as debugging your TPL:

1. You can use iwpt_compile.ipl (in iw-home/bin) to run a generation from the command line, this will give you better debug information than the TeamSite UI.
2. Have you verified that your commonPresentationRoutines.pm is valid? The easiest way to achieve this is probably to copy it to your local PC and create a very simple perl file that includes it.

Hope this is of some help.
Darren.

Hi,

Found it, me being an idiot again, the y: drive path was wrong all along, no wonder it didn't work.

Sorry for being so dumn!

Have to say though that the ostream filter thing has opened my eyes to a whole world of possibilities - as well as removing white space, you could use it for validation purposes, for example, checking for any images without an alt tag and adding them by regexp, or checking for any internal IP addresses contained in the code and stripping it out.

I'm off to play now!

Thanks for the help agian guys, I do find DevNet to be one of the most helpful and friendly forums out there.

As dazzlad suggested - use forward-slashes whenever possible - it makes the code far easier to read, in some cases easier to code, and more portable in general.

I'd also recommend that you put your custom modules within IWHOME/iw-perl/site/lib/ - usually within a sub-directory named for the customer / organization. For example IWHOME/iw-perl/site/lib/SCN/PTcommon.pm - and then you would reference it within your PTs as:...
use SCN: Smiley Tongue

Tcommon;
...no need for a use lib line at all, since the site/lib/ path is on the built-in @INC path; and although there is at least one dissenting opinion that has been posted - Interwoven has promised not to touch the site/lib/ path during upgrades, service packs and patch installations - so it should be "safe" to put your customizations there. (don't touch anything in iw-perl/vendor/lib/ though)

Following all that - again supporting dazzlad's post - use iwpt_compile.ipl with the '-ocode' flag to generate a script that can more easily be debugged. It's not always easy - but it's a start in the right direction when a problem like this occurs.

If you want to verify the syntax in your module alone - just do:iwperl -w -c IWHOME/iw-perl/site/lib/PTcommon.pm - the same way you would with a perl script. It won't tell you if the logic is right, but it will tell you if you made any "silly" syntactic errors in the code.
