HI Folks,
We have a web-page for which the display layout is not fix i.e. if today we have one image and description text, tomorrow user can add a html table or any formatted text.
Basically we are unaware of the layout of presentation template, so I need to know is it possible to generate a presentation template dynamically?
Regards
Pankaj

In my opinion you have few options:
1. Identify the variuos types of presentation styles and create separate DCT. Benefit is that this will give you control over managing of the presentation layouts.
2. Provide a drop down with a list of identified layouts, let the user select what kinda page is it based on which the tpl will render the page. Use Containers for each type of layout.
3. This is the simplest one, in case you cannot identify the various layouts, provide the user with a textarea with visual format and let the user create the page. With this you will have minimum control over the layouts.
I hope the information helps.

Thanks for reply.
But I am not sure how much stable / customizable VF editor is? Can you please mention any specific disadvantages of VF editor, if any.
This will help us in deciding, should we go for VF editor or not?
Please reply
Thanks and Regards

Stability is not an issue but incase you haven't virtualized ur teamSite environment and you will move the files to some other server, then you need to programmatically handle the resources path e.g. when a user will add a image in the area the path would be relative to the w/a so in case you want to generate a html and save it into some folder you have to use relative path..
same goes for hyperlinks or any other resources that are enbedded inside the textarea.

OK.
We can divide our web pages into three section header (contents are not changed frequently), footer (contents are not changed frequently) and main content area. For the main area we have to create DCT and presentation template, but client is insisting that provide facility for adding / deleting / updating contents in this area, so that if tomorrow he wants he can change the whole layout of the main area. So do you feel should we provide him the VF data field for this?
Please let me know your views
Thanks a lot...

Yes you can use VF for this.
But still I'm not comfortable with just one DCT for the entire project.
Make highly customized dct that can be:\
1. tabular structure with rows and column as replicants
2. image and text where user can specify whether to render image left text right or imasge on top and text below
3. apart from this you can give the blank textarea with VF for free form
What say??

Yes, that nice idea.
We can do following things:
1. Will identify the common presentation areas on all the pages and provide create common presentation templates.
2. Identify page contents for which the layout is not fix then we will create VF data field for them.
One more thing, if most of the pages includes common contents like Title and Description, so should we identify such common content areas and design presentation templates for them or should we create presentation templates and DCTs as per the whole page content?
Please let me know your view
Thanks

Pankaj I'm not clear on what you said.
About common template areas you can handle it two ways:
1. Direct: Have those elements in the DCT for each type of template.
2. Dynamic include: you can have one XML created for the common area s in the form of a dct elements and include it dynamically into the DCT using the include statement.
The benefit of going with the second approach is that in case of a change in the common fields you have to change only the xml. In the first case you have to change in each and every DCT

Thanks for response
Please comment on following points:
1. Is it a good idea to create presentation templates for each page or to create it for all common areas on all pages?
2. Including xml dynamically is a good approach so DCT should include one drop down which list down all the possible formats / pages and depending on user selection we will be including the required data fields?
3. We are identifying the pages, for which layout is not fix, so we will provide DCT with VF editor for such pages.
Thanks

1. Is it a good idea to create presentation templates for each page or to create it for all common areas on all pages?
Creating separate format will make it easier for the author to enter content. In my experience ppl. populating content find it easier if they see a direct option while creating new data record. So for Text and Image they can go ahead and select that option. Also this makes it easier for you while coding the presentation templates as you code will be clean.
2. Including xml dynamically is a good approach so DCT should include one drop down which list down all the possible formats / pages and depending on user selection we will be including the required data fields?
What I meant by dynamic include was: There will be some firlds that would appear on eahc page like page title, author name, date of publish etc. Keep these in a xml and load dynamically.
3. We are identifying the pages, for which layout is not fix, so we will provide DCT with VF editor for such pages.
Yes, this is the only thing you can do in this case
