Design Question on Accessing External Datasources

Hello Techies--

We have another in-house application which needs the Description name of the document being stored into WorkStie to have the same TXT_NAME column value. I would like to offer a pop-up window with a drop-down list populated from that application's Oracle database, then have the user select the value--and have that value populate the Description field in the properties menu. Can this be done? If so, what would I need to do to make this happen--or--alternatively, if this possibility can't exactly happen--what other design possibilities might there be?

Are you asking how you would populate the description field of a worksite document once the value is obtained from the Oracle db?

If you're importing a new document to Worksite, at the time of fetching the description value from the external database, there are two approaches you may try:

I. Develop an ICommand Event Wrapper to catch the OnitDialog event handler to add your custom implementation in the event that will 1) make a call to query for the external db value, and 2) populate the queried value in the description field by calling the SetAttributeValueByID (which is off of the dialog object passed into the event handler). For further clarification and code example, please see customcommands.pdf/CUSTOMCOMMANDS_80.pdf: Chapter 7 and ImanEvtTemplate.vbp (in <installed_path>\iToolkit\iCommands\VB\MyVBIManEvt\)

2. Develop a COM Server Component object that will have the implementation in querying for the external db value, and that it can be passed to a client-side script via an exposed property or method. In NewProf.nrs, you may catch the OnitDialog event to consume this helper object to get the external db value and set it to the method SetAttributeValueByID. Please see VBScript.pdf/VB Scripting for WorkSite Dialogs.pdf for further reference info on New Profile event handling.
