Learning Content Management Systems
mike_jaixen
Anybody familiar with any Learning Content Management Systems that might be compatable or built on Interwoven? Our training department has tried a couple of tools that create online courses with mixed success, and now thinks that a Learning Content Management System is the answer. The 30 second explanation I've gotten is that LCMS's are targeted towards developing training content. The course is delivered either by HTML or Flash, and includes periodic quizzes and tests where the results are scored and saved into an online "registrar" database that tracks your training history.

If you have ever subjected yourself to Interwoven web-based training, you can clearly see that they aren't the industry leader in this field. I believe they even outsource the delivery of their training to a third party service. I think they use Docent(?) for their training? The URL is

Just to clarify, Interwoven outsources the hosting of the Web based training that is part of Cyberschool, but the course development and production is done in house.

I don't think this is an answer to the original question.
We have not outsourced training delivery or course development to third parties. We get very positive feedback from our customers on our WBTs. True, they are not very animated. However, they are available 24x7, don't require travel, and they are economical.
We do use Docent (now SumTotal Systems) for our WBT development along with flash, DreamWeaver and Viewlet Builder. The LMS is not integrated with TeamSite, I am sorry to say. We move files between the Docent development server and our TeamSite source control system.

It is not so much that the WBTs aren't animated, they are out of date (TS admin 5.5 anyone?) and some of the Content Center training modules are frankly fairly thin for the price. The one-year license per user is also not a good fit for users who will most likely only use the training once, if that. People might be tempted to go back to the training during their one year if it wasn't a strictly linear, non-searchable presentation model.
If you are truly interested in some honest feedback about the Interwoven training curriculum, here are some ways IW could improve their training:
1. In the instructor led class manuals, add page numbers to the table of contents and add a comprehensive index. It is very difficult to find something you covered in class when searching in the training manual while on the job.
2. In the instructor led class manuals, at least add the section name and number to the bottom of each page.
3. Require the instructors to setup and test the labs before the class arrives on training day. Having an instructor blow off your questions while claiming that only about 75% of the labs actually work and let class out 2 hours early doesn't exactly scream 'bang for your buck' when you have traveled to Sunnyvale for training. Not all trainers are like this, Rick Roberts is great. My last trainer however seemed like he couldn't get out the door fast enough.
On a positive note, the snacks and drinks at training are a nice touch. I don't feel guilty posting this because your post was off topic too. Hope this doesn't cause any tears or incite a riot; I really just want to see better training in the future.
