Syntax Question

summergs

Hello,
I have the following code that works great:
$testFile = "\templatedata\Projects\1234\data\dcr";
my $filter = ($testFile =~ m/\/templatedata\/Projects\/(.*?)\/data\/.*$/);
$directory = $1;

Problem is.. I need to reset $1 as I am using the same regex later on in my program an $1 is persisting from my first regex statement

Thanks in Advance!

What's the problem, then? You're essentially saving the value of $1 to $directory. The next time you have a regex with ( ), your $1 will be replaced for you automatically.

Are you getting errors somewhere? I guess I don't see the conflict.

I assumed that as well, however, when I ran another iteration of regex $1 is not returning the current value, rather it is returning the value of the first regex?!? Its got me puzzled

$1 just matches whatever was contained in the first set of parentheses in the previous regular expression. So there should be no need to "reset" it.

As far as your code you have there, I am assuming $filter is some useless variable that is not used? Do this instead:

my $testFile = '/templatedata/Projects/1234/data/dcr';
my ($directory) = $testFile =~ m|/templatedata/Projects/([^/]*?)/data/|;

As far as the code that is breaking further down in your script, perhaps you can post it and someone can see what is amiss?

In that case, it reflects more on your 2nd regex -- are you sure it's even matching? I would put money on "no", since $1 would be assigned to whatever the most recent regex matches, so there is no need to explicitly reset it.

Windows strikes again. The problem was the dang slashes vs. backslashs. Thanks for everyones input!

Migrateduser

Right, those dang slashes (actually dang winders). Generally regex dirsep with something like [\\/:]+ for portability.

Personally, I prefer to make sure all paths are switched to use '/' with $var =~ tr|\\|/|; so that I don't have to make my regex's [more] convoluted [than necessary].

I also do path normalization in a module, so if it's broken I only have one place to fix it, then convert back to OS dirsep when needed (also in the module). I wish Interwoven would provide these kinds of simple resources so 1000+ customers don't need to design, implement and test their own. A standard approach would make it easier for me to move from project to project.

1000+ customers

Are there really that many customers? I guess they can't exactly claim that 3 = a slew, eh?

I don't know for sure, but that's what marketing claims. Note that devnet claims 9201 Registered User(s), but at least three of those are me, and apparently 8,000+ don't post.

Is that also like saying "Billions and Billions Served"? I remember being 6 and seeing that displayed on the McDonald's sign, when I said to my mom, "Aren't there only 5 billion people in the world?"

Too Funny!

Dave must be younger than I. I remember when it had an actual number, like 2 billion. I assume the number refers to the number of hamburgers rather than the number of customers. Not sure how that applies in IWOV's case...

2 billion...Not sure how that applies in IWOV's case

Maybe Number of Open Bugs?

Excellent post. Gotta be the market leader in something. Feature:bug ratio seems to be about 1:1 currently.

I think I remember when they actually posted the numbers, too. But before they just posted "Billions and Billions", it would amaze me that they'd increment the number by another couple of billion every month or so. I wasn't so young or naive enough to think that, based on the McDonald's signs, there was an impending population crisis and not only that, so many of these "new" people were eating at McDonald's and we'd be only a few years away from having an obesity pandemic in our super-sized hands.

Oh, hey... I guess that would have been half right!
