How to print code on new lines with iwpt_output

dlsoderberg

I'm sure this is an easy one, but I've tried all kinds of variations with no luck. I have the following block of code:

my $ci1 = iwpt_dcr_value("dcr.Culture_Image1");
$ci1 =~ s/\/deploy\/docroot//;
my $ci2 = iwpt_dcr_value("dcr.Culture_Image2");
$ci2 =~ s/\/deploy\/docroot//;
my $ci3 = iwpt_dcr_value("dcr.Culture_Image3");
$ci3 =~ s/\/deploy\/docroot//;
my $ci4 = iwpt_dcr_value("dcr.Culture_Image4");
$ci4 =~ s/\/deploy\/docroot//;
iwpt_output('<tr><td align="center"><img src="' . $ci1 . '" height="180" width="240"/></td></tr>');
iwpt_output('<tr><td><img src="/common/images/spacer.gif" height="70" width="1"/></td></tr>');
iwpt_output('<tr><td align="center"><img src="' . $ci2 . '" height="240" width="180"/></td></tr>');
iwpt_output('<tr><td><img src="/common/images/spacer.gif" height="70" width="1"/></td></tr>');
iwpt_output('<tr><td align="center"><img src="' . $ci3 . '" height="240" width="180"/></td></tr>');
iwpt_output('<tr><td><img src="/common/images/spacer.gif" height="70" width="1"/></td></tr>');
iwpt_output('<tr><td align="center"><img src="' . $ci4 . '" height="170" width="240"/></td></tr>');
iwpt_output('<tr><td><img src="/common/images/spacer.gif" height="100" width="1"/></td></tr>');

My problem is all of the iwpt_output lines end up one after another on 1 line of code in the output file. How can I force each iwpt_output onto its own line in the output? I've tried a lot of variations with '\n' and 'qq' with no luck.

Thanks in advance for any help.

iwpt_output('<tr><td align="center"><img src="' . $ci1 . '" height="180" width="240"/></td></tr>\n');

Repeat the "\n" (newline character) for each iwpt_output statement, where you desire to have a linebreak.

I've tried that...that just produces all of my output statements with '\n' in between each of them still on the same line.

You need to use double-quotes "...\n" not single-quotes '...\n' - the latter will not interpret \n as being a newline

Sorry I missed this initially... iwpt_output needs double quotes and not single quotes. Double quotes will treat your string in a more literal context.

That's because of the single quotes. Try this instead:

iwpt_output("<tr><td align='center'><img src='$ci1' height='180' width='240'/></td></tr>\n");

That's not really true. It has nothing to do with iwpt_output per se, but rather with basic Perl syntax. Strings can be constructed with single or double quotes, but single quotes prevents variable interpolation and escape sequence processing. iwpt_output just takes a string - it doesn't care how it was constructed.

True. I meant in this particular instance, he would want to use double quotes.

I rarely ever use single quotes in Perl when trying to quote something, which is why it should have stood out to me when I read the post initially.

Dwayne,

single quotes make HTML non XML-complaint

single quotes make HTML non XML-complaint

Are you sure about that? I was positive that either form of quote was acceptable XML (provided, of course, that you used a "matched set" within one string).

well, my bad. However, this comes from a number of my clients who standartised on double quotes.... Smiley Happy

actually, now I've checked, and yes, I am sure (finally) about that:

from http://www.websitetips.com/info/xhtml/basics.shtml

Every attribute value must be in double quotes, such as:
<img src="image.gif" height="150" width="40" alt="funny face" />

From http://www.w3schools.com/xml/xml_attributes.asp:

Or, from http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/: [10] AttValue ::= '"' ([^<&"] | Reference)* '"'
| "'" ([^<&'] | Reference)* "'"It doesn't matter which quoting style you use as long as your consistant for any given attribute - i.e. <tagname attr1='abc' attr2="def"/> is perfectly legal.

I'd rather get my information from the W3C anyway, not websitetips.com, which I hadn't heard of until today.

Perhaps the more pertinent question here is: Does Interwoven enforce a double-quote rule or are they more lenient, as the current Standards suggest?

I've never had any problem freely intermingling single and double quotes in terms of the XML being parsed by Interwoven software. Where I HAVE run into difficulties is with the configuration composer in OpenDeploy 5.6 (haven't tried it in 6.0 yet). The composer always uses double quotes for attributes, which is fine, unless I need to embed quote marks inside the attribute (which is a common requirement for DnR scripts). The composer doesn't handle that well at all. I usually have to edit the deployment config scripts manually in that case.

Which just goes to prove that the Internet has allowed us to progress to the point where we can get the wrong answer more quickly than ever.
