I've got an old stuffed Linus, but I'm not sure I'd want it on your lap. Oh wait, you said Linux, not Linus. Never mind.

Asking if RedHat is the best is like asking if Windows 2000 is the best. There are widely varying opinions. Personally, I've only ever used RedHat, so to me, it's the best (of 1 tried). I think the installer for RedHat is pretty straight forward and they have pretty good support for modern hardware (as well as legacy). The problem with RedHat is that they are no longer releasing a free version of the OS. Therefore, there won't be any kernel updates, etc. For this reason alone, you may want to consider some of the other flavors that are still free.

Probably the easiest one to get for just bandwidth is debian, http://www.debian.org. Just make the boot CDs and lash them in.

RedHat Download section

Red Hat Enterprise Linux: $175
Fedora Project: Free to download.

I thought "Fedora" was the same as RedHat except for the support, etc.
But then little do I know about the Linux Cult

Some friends of mine just loaded Yellow Dog on an apple powerbook and are very happy with it. Straightforward install, etc.

First of all.

Download Knoppix (www.knoppix.net) and try it out. It's a LiveCD distro and it will basically tell, which hardware will work with Linux.

If you like what you see, it is very easy to install to the hard-drive.
Just did this recently on my g/f Latitude D400

My two personal favorites (in order of installation ease) are:

SuSE Linux
and
Mandrake Linux

Hope this helps!
