Web CMS (TeamSite)
FTP Server to Teamsite
Doy
Hi to all,
Is it possible for the Teamsite to communicate to an FTP Server using a workflow and copy the necessary files to my workarea?
Please help me if this is possible.
Thank you very much in advance.
Tanie

I'm not clear on how you want this workflow to work -- does it FTP after the workflow is done and you're basically trying to mimic a reverse deployment?
You can use the Net::FTP Perl module in an external task. I'm not sure if this would accomplish what you want but again, I'm not 100% clear on what you want to do with the workflow.

As Dave said, it's certainly possible to have an external task communicate with an FTP server to pull some files. The questions become:
How does the code determine which files to transfer
What should it do with them once they're transferred

From an external task, we know which files are attached by
$task->GetFiles();
-- what I'm wondering is what Doy wants to do with the workflow and why he seems to want a reverse deployment.
Depending on what operating system is being used, we may also be able to execute a script (or whatever) on the other side once the file is transferred.

I'm aware of the
GetFiles
method. However, the original question asked about pulling files
FROM
the FTP server. That implies to me that there's at least the possibility that these are files which do not currently exist in the workarea, meaning that they can't already be attached to the task.

Yeah, agreed... I guess I don't know what his/her intention is.

Hi,
What were trying to do is, we want to create a CMS using teamsite opendeploy.
Here's how we wanted to happen, all the files we need will be coming from the FTP then from the FTP it will be send to teamsite opendeploy to be
categorized.
We already have created the structure for were the files will be categorized. Our main problem is how to get the file from the FTP going to the
workarea. Is their any method that we can use to do this or is it possible?

TeamSite and OpenDeploy are two different products -- are you looking to use TeamSite at all in this process or are you intending for files to come from this FTP server and be "deployed" and categorized and THEN be put into TeamSite?
If that's the case, it sounds like what you want to do is have an OD base sitting on the FTP server with an OD receiver on the TeamSite box. Yes, you can schedule automatic deployments but if your files are coming from this FTP server, I think you should consider it from that direction... it sounds as though you're focused too much on the TeamSite box. After your automated deployments from the FTP server to the TS box, you can specify in the OD config for a script to run at the end of the deployment to do the categorization.
Your business requirements are still a bit foggy but does it sound like I have it right?

OD 6 provides for interfaces with things like FTP servers - but I'm not sure if it provides for the ability to do a reverse-deployment *from* and FTP server (perhaps Todd will chime in here?) - If it does - you might be able to do that without having to install OD (Base or Receiver) on the FTP server.
Otherwise - you'd probably have to install OD or some script that performs FTP protocol transfers on the FTP server and set it up to transfer the files you want / where you want them / when you want them (rather a wide-open field for implementations and issues surrounding them).
Once you get the files to the TeamSite server it sounds like you need to do additional processing of the files to get them into the right places and/or formatted as DCRs or some such. If you're using OD - you could kick off a DNR script to do this kind of thing. If you're using a scripted approach to transfer the files it's more complicated (and again, the details of the process to be undergone are rather vague at this point [to us] and thus a wide-open area for theoretical discussions)

I agree with Fish and if you decide to take the scripting route (versus OD), if you have to make that decision, I recommend the Net::FTP module -- it's very nice.

Just to chime in on the relationship between FTP and OD... OD ships with an FTP delivery adapter that supports forward deployments only.
If you want to pull files via FTP using OD, then it should be possible to write a payload adapter that gets spun up at the beginning of the deployment, logs into the FTP server, and pulls the files over. OD would then be able to "deploy" those files from where the adapter dropped them to wherever they need to go.
If you'd like to discuss OD-FTP, perhaps consider posting on the OpenDeploy forum. (I usually don't check the Workflow forum, but was given a pointer to this thread.)

Yes Dave thats how we intend it to happen, from FTP server and be deployed and categorized then be put into Teamsite.
I'll try using the OD on the FTP server and on the Teamsite.
I'll be informing you about our progress.
Thank you very much for the big help.
