Visualformat styles on table cells

Has anyone managed to use Visualformat with a stylesheet that enables table cell styles to be defined without having to define them as both table cell and table styles in the stylesheet.

We have a number of styles which the users want to be able to apply to table cells so the styles have been added to the stylesheet as td.style1, td.style2, etc. However, in order for them to appear on the style class dropdown on the VF menu when a table cell is selected table.style1 and table.style2 also need to be defined, which we do not want. If dummy table styles are added to the style sheet then selecting them does set the class on the td tag not thte table tag so at least that is correct, but it should be possible to specify the styles only for td tags surely?
