gzip compression for servlet engine?

I'm using TeamSite 6.7.2 on Windows 2003 and I found that there is an option in the iw-home\servletd\conf\server.xml file to configure the servlet engine to use gzip compression. Has anyone enabled this and are there any issues in doing so? I'm wondering why it's not doing this by default since it can speed things up.

I believe that on ts672 apache is configured by default to use mod_deflate. So I think this would include the compression of ALL responses from the servlet since these are routed over apache.
