How to view genereted xls reports in Open Office
mmarto
Hi everybody, I'd like to ask if there is a way to be able to view birt reports exported as xls files in Open Office.
For now, when I export a birt report as xls and try to open it with open office calc it shows the xml source nor the data.
I want my reports to be able to be viewed both with MS Office and Open Office
Thanx in advanced for any help and recomendations.

Hi mmarto,
What version of Open Office are you using?

The XLS output from BIRT is actually XML. Excel has been able to read this XML format since Office 2003, I believe. If you're not able to open this type of file correctly with Open Office, you may want to try <a class='bbc_url' href='
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tribix/'>this</a>
. It's an XLS emitter from Tribix that emits the true XLS binary format.<br />

Hope this helps.

Hi, mwilliams, thank you for the answers
I use OpenOffice 3 and obviously it doesn't handle the specific excel XML format. Moreover the Microsoft Excel Viewer itself also doesn't recognize it.
So I guess my only option is the Tribix emitter.
I'd like to ask if the emitter is compatible with the latest birt reports?
mwilliams
mmarto,
I believe Tribix has a version of the emitter for each version of BIRT.
mmarto
Yes they have :-)
Thanx for the hint. The emitter is exactly what I need. I'm trying to make my birt reports not so MS Office dependent. I'm definitely going to give it a try.

No problem. Good luck!
