Visual Format and Microsoft Word

Our Content Providers often get their content from Word documents. When we cut and paste this content into Visual Format (TeamSite v5.0), some formatting is lost, and extra unnecessary tags are added to the code. For example, <span> around everything.

Does anyone have a good solution for getting Word doc content into TeamSite via VF?

I was working with this topic today in VF. The Style attribute 'preservewordstyles' (or something like that) seems to apply ONLY to Word2000 pastes. It doesn't affect styled text pasted from Word97. Reading all of the VF docs, it seems that you need to create a Style sheet that VF can use to override or replace the styles that come in from the user or Word. I'm not clear on how this ties together yet.

We're in a position where we'd really like NO styles to come in from Word -- we control pretty much all of our presentation in our page generation process (ATG Dynamo) through our own style sheet on the web site. It would be nice if stuff pasted from Word (any version) could be stripped of it's color, font face, and what-not right in VF.

If anyone has guidance on this, I'd love to hear it.

A poor solution is to save the document in some text format. I've used .asc format which tries its best to keep the spacing correct. But you lose ALL style information, you get plain text.

A simple way to do this as well is to cut from word, paste to notepad, then from notepad to teamsite, all formatting is gone.

To strip off most MS Word content, edit your visualformatconfig.xml file (usually in $TSHOME/httpd/iw/config).

Add this section under the "clean charencode" section:

        < attribute>class< /attribute>
        < attribute>style< /attribute>
        < attribute>align< /attribute>
        < tagonly>font< /tagonly>

Note that I add a space character between every opening less-than-sign and the next character.

Tom, THANKS! This is a big step towards what we want to do. I've done some initial testing and this works great, even when pasting from Word97 (which is our standard platform).

I must have missed KB article 46372 when looking for info on the support site.

Why do we need that space... It works for us even without putting that space...Are we missing something?
