Help with Lucene

Hi,

I am trying to get to grips with Lucene - actually for use with a TeamSite portal.

I know that Lucene is included as part of WorkSiteMP. Anyone able to help me with:

- Can Lucene work on PDF, Word docs, etc.?
- Can I customize the metadata that Lucene will search one? e.g. date range, author name, etc.
- Any performance issues?
- Can it handle Chinese and Thai languages?

Lucene only supports indexing of text documents. Worksite MP converts word documents and other binary formats to text
before indexing them. There are some open source document converters that you can checkout on the Jakarta POI project.

Lucene itself supports unicode indexing. Worksite MP does double byte language indexing with Lucene.
Worksite MP currently supports German, French, English, and Chinese documents.

Japanese, Russian, and Korean support is currently being added.

Have not had any requests for Thai yet.

You can definitely do field and range searches with Lucene.

Worksite MP currently does not have any API's to allow users to do field searching at this time.
Field searching is currently done as a combination of full text searching and database meta data searching.

Forgot to mention that Worksite MP uses a third party program to convert binary formatted files to text.
The program is called INSO.
