"ghost" files and editions
isuquinndog
Do files that are marked as delete, but are no longer in WA or staging still show up if a file is in an edition?

Can you provide more context for your question?
What version of TS?
Are you talking about via the GUI (which one) or file system interface or backing store?

TS 6.1
Using CC Pro and I click on View--->All and Deleted Files I see ghost files (what we call them), even if they have been deleted.
I also see ghost files when I view Staging using Pro and do the same menu command. I'm not sure why they are still there.

In 6.x in CCPro (and perhaps CCStd?) files which have been deleted but the deletions have not yet been submitted - will show up as "ghost" files because they still exist in STAGING.
If those files are also included in one or more editions then they will remain in the edition(s) even after you have submitted the deletions to staging (they are sometimes referred to as "holes").
The specific versions of the file(s) will not be removed from the backing store until there are NO references to it in any edition, staging area or workarea.

So then can I assume that "hole" or "ghost" files that show up on staging are showing up because they are also still in editions?
Thanks for the reply!

If you're looking at STAGING and not in a workarea - you shouldn't see "ghost" files. They should only show up in workareas where the files were deleted and not submitted.
If you are seeing them in STAGING - could you perhaps take a screen shot and post it as an attachment?

Yeah, as you can see in the URL, it's our staging folder. There are two folders and a file at this level.

Yeah - I just ran into this myself (in a workarea) - apparently if you select View > All and Deleted Files (which you have) - it will show you the "ghost" files for any file which exists within the backing store but is not present in the current area; If instead you select View > All Files, then the workarea will show you the deleted-but-not-submitted files, but after they're submitted you will no longer see them.
I'm not entirely sure what the value is of this for the staging area - but it can be useful in a workarea for restoring a versioned file that was accidently (or incorrectly) deleted.

That's what I figured, that those files are in editions somewhere.
Thanks so much!

I've been posting on this a few weeks back. In the end, I resorted to re-creating the whole branch as there were hundreds of editions and it was virtually impossible to check every single one of them, provided I was under some deadline pressure.

Does anyone know if this can be turned off? To not show the "holes" in your workarea like old TS 5.5
Thanks in advance!

Don't use the "view all and deleted files" option
See if you can remove that view via the UITK.

No...I mean there are files that have been deleted in a workarea that have not be submitted to staging...when I select view "All Files" I see all files + the "holes" same thing happens when selecting "All and Deleted files" no differnece between the views.
1. Am I correct, are you seeing the same thing? Is this a Bug?
2. In old 5.5.2 when I delete a file I no longer see it even though I haven't submitted the deleted file yet. I only would see it in 5.5.2 if I slect view modified all. Can I change it to like 5.5.2 if what I am doing is correct
Thanks in advance!

Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the all and deleted give us the ability to see all the files that have been in the branch/workarea... this way if today you delete foo.html, and six month from now you want to revert back to what it was you do not have to re-create it or search in editions. You can just click view all and deleted and click properties of the file, and then versions?
Or in 6.5 (not sure about 6.1) when you view all and deleted you see a nice restore icon that appears overtop where the new folder link is.
So am I missing something?

If you truly want to delete a file from your site, you should delete in the workarea, submit the deleted file to staging and get latest to all workareas. Leaving deleted files in a workarea is sloppy. Yes, it would be nice if there were a configuration in 6.5 to hide deleted files in a workarea, but they wouldn't exist if the users were deleting files properly. IMO, having them show up forces you to handle deletions in an appropriate manner,

Or, I think it's reasonable for TS to allow the capability of viewing all non-deleted files. I ponder at the 6.5 options on the View drop-down menu... particularly "All Files" and "All and Deleted Files." Doesn't "All" imply the entire set, of which Deleted Files would certainly be a part? If a file is deleted and no one has selected "All and Deleted Files", does it make a sound?

On mine I only have one workarea, and when I do view all, and deleted it still shows up, so I think this functionality is to allow you to see files that were deleted in the past that you can get back. After looking at the functionality I kinda like it. It keeps me from having to go through editions and seing where is that file that was deleted.

I finally got a handle on "All and deleted".
My question though is still this. In 5.5.2 when we deleted a file in a workarea you didn't see it. Not until you did a view list modified. You many consider this "Slopy" but we actually used it as a feature. Would that be possible in 6.5?
When users did a get latest to their workarea an update trigger ran which deleted it from their workarea so they wouldn't see it. Yes I'll agree it is very risky if they did submit their deletion.
Another things is that they should have used our group of users as testers becasue view all and view all and deleted is confusing and I know they will bark about it.
Oooo that gives me an idea...I bet there is an API call to retrieve all files minus the "ghosts", "holes" "spots"...I think the real technical term is called 'Shadows" Ghoti.
Anyone got that API?
Hmm on second thoguht returning the list shouldn't be to hard...displaying them in the GUI now that is what I call a lead developer. Me I'm just a little TS admin.
Thanks in advance!
