Is my DCR to large

Hi,

I have a problem with a specific DCR. I can view the DCR (allthough it is quite slow to show the contents), but when i try to edit it, the browser hangs.

The size of the DCR file is 154 K.

I have no problem generating the output from the file, so i don't expect it to be corrupt in any way.

I hope you can supply me with a reason - and hopefully a solution :-)

Probably you will need to redesign the template, especially if it has a lot of replicant instances, or even worse, if you are running a pre-6.0 version of TeamSite and have more than 5 or 6 textareas with visual format. We had a template at one job that took over five minutes to load when one went to edit it, but the client didn't want to redesign it (it had over 500 instances of one replicant)

Does this DCR contain a lot of replicants (or perhaps more correctly: one or more replicants with lots of instances)?
If so - do these replicants contain visual-format textareas?
If so - are you using the 'external' editor for these fields (this is specific for pre-TS6 implementations)

We noticed trouble with more that 10 visual format textareas in TS 552. Likely that
is client dependant

An interesting thing to do while you're opening up the DCR to edit is pull up your Task Manager and watch how your CPU spikes. On most systems, the CPU will spike and plateau when VFE's are rendered.

Okay, so maybe it's not so interesting but I thought I would put it out there.

Ok. Thanks for your answers. I will just provide some extra infos:

The system is TeamSite 5.5.2

The processor is going 100% when i try to edit the data.

The DCR contains a lot of replicant instances. The structure is like this:
--basic page info
--Continent a
----Country 1
----Country 2
----Country 3
--Continent b
----Contry 4
----Contry 5
etc.

There is 190 country instances on 6 continent instances. Each country contains a Visualformat editor...

Well, basically i can read from your answers that i have to redesign the template structure. That was what i expected, but as I am quite new to IW, i'm happy that you confirmed my suspition.

First thing to do is make sure all the visual format fields have external-editor="t" set for them.

If they don't, this is the most trivial fix and doesn't require changing any of the DCT/DCR/PT structure / interactions - but does require some new user training.

If you already have this set - then there's a bigger issue in which you need to figure out how to restructure what you have and/or set max values for the replicants - this becomes a lot more work all around (especially if you already have a significant amount of DCRs created for that DCT type)

I'm wondering why you are using a VFE for the country field?

Are there necessary features in VFE that made this desirable, or is it basically not matter how this field is formatted, etc.? What you can always do (and I'm surprised that no one has yet mentioned it here) is instead of having the VFE render on the DCT, itself, implement it as a callout, so that all you have on the DCT is a text area that will receive the rendered HTML from the VFE callout. There's plenty of documentation about this...

You should see first if all of the VFE fields are actually necessary and consider redesigning the DCT but, if that can't change much, look into a VFE callout. It's not as nice a user experience as the other, but your resources are clearly being compromised here.

Even without VFE you are probably going to run into problems with it being that large. I would suggest splitting the DCR into one per continent, and then load multiple DCRs into your presentation template.

I will probably split it up into smaller pieces. I tried to remove the VFE, and i still had to wait 2-3 minutes before i could edit anything.
