I believe .dcr is a "known" extension for shockwave movies - which, in the past, would occasionally cause problems (I think that might have been pre-5x) but now I believe is generally ignored as it isn't [by default] configured in the iw-webd [apache] server.
The advantage to using an extension (.dcr or otherwise) is that you might be able to make use of the fact in scripts you write (especially if you're consistent and can "force" the extension to be used.
Other than that, there isn't really any advantage or disadvantage to using (or not using) an extension on your DCRs.
One of my customers explicitly prohibits extensions on DCR names - as it uses the DCR name as the basis for the generated output file names (this could still work with an extension, but it's easier without)

I've found DCR extensions as being valuable when one wants to exclude DCRs from tagging step in CC STD in TS 6. However, because no-one can enforce DCR extension naming (unlike output templated files), this should be enforced by other means...

I agree, I normally stick with the .dcr extension.
I also found it useful as a user training means.
Just like they learn about word documents when they see .doc
.dcr tells them it's a DCR file.
A little formapi can help enforce a naming convention like this.
If I find it I'll attach it.
