How to install XML::Xerces.pm on Win2k?

Hi,

has anybody ever installed XML::Xerces.pm from http://xml.apache.org/xerces-p/ in Teamsite-perl on Windows?

The windows binary install uses ppm which does not come with iw-perl. With this ppm I've has installed it successfully on my local machine under ActiveState-Perl.

But on the Teamsite box ppm won't work. Copying the files from the zip to the various locations makes perl stop without error on "use XML::Xerces".

If you were to copy the files, it seems that you could use a BEGIN block in your code to include the path where Xerces.pm lives. To which location did you copy this file?

Try using 'cpan' instead of 'ppm'

Hi,

cpan comes a long way but fails in the on the 'make test':

Running install for module XML::Xerces
Running make for J/JA/JASONS/XML-Xerces-2.5.0-0.tar.gz
Is already unwrapped into directory \.cpan\build\XML-Xerces-2.5.0-0
Has already been processed within this session
Running make test
'test' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
test -- NOT OK
Running make install
make test had returned bad status, won't install without force

Do you know how to solve this? (Note: it's windows not Unix)

Check the makefile - does it include a 'test' target? If not - you can do a force install and hope for the best.

It does contain a test-target:

test :: $(TEST_TYPE)
$(NOECHO) cd Handler && $(TEST_F) $(FIRST_MAKEFILE) && $(MAKE) test $(PASTHRU)

How can I run/execute a Makefile outside of cpan?

"iwperl Makefile" does not work.

Do you have 'make' or 'nmake' or 'gmake' on your server?
I imagine you do - because otherwise it should have complained about not finding a 'make' program to process the Makefile with.

Makefiles are not executed - they are processed by a program (make, nmake, gmake, imake, there are a bunch of variants out there)

If you have any colleagues who have done any kind of software development - they should be able to help you (and it will be easier for them to show you in person than it will be for me or anyone else here to try to dictate how to do things over a forum).

I found nmake on the microsoft site. But now it's complaining about a missing cl.exe. Looks like I need to install the Visual C++ compiler of 23 MB to make this work.

To much hassle for this. Think I'm giving up on this. Why isn't their a simple way to install Xerces on Win2k?

If it's only a *.pm file - with no additional libraries needing to be built - then you could just copy it into place yourself.
But all CPAN modules are packaged in a uniform manner to use 'make' to perform the various build/test/install steps - which over the long run has proven reasonably reliable.

For some modules it's a bit of overkill - but for others it is a necessity.

If you read the README file for this particular module - it clearly states that you need an ANSI C++ compiler.

the perl-modules are nothing more then wrappers around C-libraries. :-(

To share with you, the results of what I found out on this:

- getting the Xerces.pm to work within the iw-perl environment did not work for me. I downloaded the binary version of the package from apache.org/xerces-p, unzipped it and file-copied the files into the iw-per/site/lib directory (Note: the arch-dir should go to auto/ & the dll somewhere in your path so it can be found). When running a perl script it would exit without an error on the "use XML::Xerces;" command. If you trace this back through the pm's you will find that the problem is somewhere in the call of the dll.

- getting the same binary-xerces.pm to work on the same machine within an ActivePerl install DID work. Again unzipped and file-copied the file into the activeperl dir. Run the same script and got it working.

So, my guess is that there must a difference between iw-perl & active-perl that makes the dll crash. :-(

Your last option could be to make&compile the xerces.pm/dll's yourself. I didn't not go through the burden of this meself. The C++ compiler downlaod from M$ alone is 23MB and one told me that it takes 2 hours to install. Good luck!
