Network question: TCP vs. UDP

Our network folks have asked me to find out what protocal is used by OpenDeploy 5.6 SP1 on the open port for receivers (default 20014): TCP, UDP, or both.

If both, which is recommended by Interwoven as a best practice?

I have created a support case (1220427) for this but maybe Todd will respond more quickly. Thanks.

OD uses TCP

99% certain OD uses TCP and not UDP.

TCP keeps the connection and guarantees the arrival of packets in order. UDP does not
so it is up to the application to put packets in order. NFS is one of the few functions
that uses UDP instead of TCP.

Fyi, the OD Reference has an entire chapter that describes ports used by OD, including the deployment port, which of course you now know is TCP. Smiley Happy

Believe me that I looked in the manuals (always RTFM) first and did not see anything that explictly spoke on the protocal used. I looked in the od.560b.admin.pdf, od.560b.inst.pdf, od.560b.rn.pdf, and od.560sp1.rn.pdf guides. In fact, doing a search on TCP only turned up one record in od.560b.rn.pdf (some HP-UX setting).

Of course, now I see that I had not looked in the od.560b.ref.pdf which I just downloaded from the support site. Taking a look at it, it still does not explicitly state that OpenDeploy is using the TCP protocal over UDP (I know, that's picky but I'm dealing with picky network engineers).

Now I'm convinced OpenDeploy uses TCP only but I have to prove it to the networking folks because they have told me that you can enable both the TCP and UDP protocal on a port, such as 20014. I'll pass this information along and see if they have additional questions.

Ask your picky network engineers (heck, I might know them) what do they need to be convinced. Follow the "help me help you" strategy.

If they are concerned about UDP traffic, just tell them to configure their firewall so it allows only TCP traffic on 20014(or whichever port you are using), and block UDP. Problem solved?

They have the documentation. You have Interwoven Prod Mgmt telling you that OD uses TCP. What kind of proof are they looking for?

No worries. Seems that additional bit of info got added to a later version of the doc. Here's from the OD 602 Ref:

"Deployments are done using a TCP session that is always initiated by the sender."

By the way, UDP is only used if you turn on the SNMP support in OD 6.
