purpose of cgi wrapper

Hi All,

I want to know what is the purpose of cgi wrapper in teamsite when we have perl files?
i had seen a thread in this forum where ghoti had mentioned that cgi were required in some earlier versions of teamsite due to some reaosn.
But i cannot find the same thread in this forum now.
So can anybody tell me why we need cgi wrapper in teamsite when we have ipl files?

The iwcgi_wrapper.cgi is used to perform setuid/seteuid functions - specifically on Unix, but sort-of on Windows - so that your script runs "as" the user who is logged into TeamSite, as opposed to the iwserver process owner.

I think i did not mention about iwcgi_wrapper.cgi file.
I am mentioning in general about cgi files which are created along with ipl files.(at least i have seen at lot of places). So my question is why cgi files are required?
i think in earlier versions there used to be some constraint that webserver never user to take ipl as executables file so instead of directly using ipl there used to a cgi file which was kind of wrapper for these ipl files.(only this much explanation i can remember from the mail which i had read a long way back which was submitted by ghoti). But i dont have the complete understand of this cgi concept.

So ghoti can you through some light on this.

Historical - from before the introduction of iwwebd (Apache) as the means of running the TS UI - on Windows this meant, usually, using IIS - and IIS didn't like Perl scripts - so a binary wrapper was created for show_env.ipl that IIS would accept, and that ran the same-named .ipl script when it was invoked.

As long as you make the #! line correct on Windows - you should no longer require a binary CGI wrapper for your CGI scripts located in IWHOME/httpd/iw-bin/
