Versions Sun JRE / Microsoft VM

Hi, we are aware that Microsoft VM does not work well with Teamsite and have read on Devnet and in TS documentation that Sun JRE version 1.4.2_06 or higher is recommended for Teamsite.

If we use Microsoft VM or a lower version of Sun JRE, Teamsite either works slowly and/or the import feature stops responding. That problem goes away when switching off Microsoft VM and using Sun JRE ver 1.4.2_06 or higher...

Now my question is are there any other functions within Teamsite that depends on the correct version of SUN JRE to work? We need to be aware of them and document what else could go wrong if using the wrong version.

Im personally using Sun JRE ver 1.4.2_10 and 1.5, both seem to work well whether connected to Teamsite from an office LAN or remotely (via Broadband).

Thanks in advance for any additional info that we should take into consideration when going around to see if all of our TS users have the correct version of SUN JRE on their workstations.

I haven't looked at the relevant docs for a while, but I also seem to remember this "1.4.2__xx or higher".
Apparently, the "higher" does not include 1.5.x though. Smiley Sad

EDIT: that said, some of our users are on Sun JRE 1.5, and it seems to be ok, apart from the "import-filelist-not-showing-all-files-in-folder" bug

An update to this scenario:

Sun JRE 1.5 or higher does not show networked drives or for some staff, even their own "C" drive doesnt appear. So we end up removing Sun JRE 1.5 from their workstations and reinstalling JRE 1.4.2_06, which has proven to be more stable and works well with Teamsite.

Now a new question, is there anyway we can have Teamsite users automatically start their sessions with the correct version of Sun JRE so we dont have to explain to them about managing or need to switch between different versions of JRE?

Better yet, has anyone come across a utility that allows end-users to switch between JRE 1.4.2_06 and 1.5+? This is becoming sort of a maintenance nightmare...

I'm not positive but I think the plan is to run ContentCenter with Sun JVM 1.5 and, accordingly, use JRE 1.5 for the Import Utility with TeamSite 6.7.1 which is currently due out Q3/Q4 this year.

We are looking at JVM 1.5 for TS 6.7.1 for the server side of Content Center code, but for the client OS especially in the way it affects Launchpad etc, the current support is for JRE 1.4.2. We also support the MS JVM which is built on a very early version of the JDK (I think it is 1.1).

Compiling Launchpad and supporting it on JRE 1.4.2, seems to works well with the MS JVM. If we go up to JRE 1.5, then it breaks Launchpad for MS JVM.

One way to solve this problem is to drop support for MS JVM on the client side and then we should be able to support JRE 1.5.

I would like to hear feedback on whether this is a problem for you or not..

Not sure you can get representative feedback here, but for my case I can say we don't need MS JVM support.

Our standard pc has WinXP with Sun JVM 1.5 and that's what ppl use, also with TS 6.5. Actually, the teamsite templating client is installed on a Metaframe farm (win2003) so people editing forms and needing visualformat, need to log in via a Metaframe session (which gives a bit of other unwanted behaviour too, like most popup windows popping up 2x (one blank, one with the page), like "new form" and "cgi callout"). euhm... starting to go off topic Smiley Wink

We are advising our clients to de-select Microsoft VM and use Sun JRE as their primary VM. On top of this, some end-users have to switch between the two because of the version of WebTrends we have, it requires MS VM. But that could go away with the new version of Webtrends - which is on the way in. There may be a couple of other special instances when end-users have to select VMs (Microsoft or Sun) for customized apps or web apps.

We have found that Sun JRE versions 1.4.2_06 and 1.4.2_10 work best.
1.5 + has problems with networked and 'c' drive connections.

Hope this info helps those who are running into this issue.

P.S. One last thing. we also utilize networked "My Documents" drives for all end-users - tied into their log in profiles. Which automatically backs up our working files on to the servers. For importing files, Teamsite cannot read this special networked drive (I dont know what you would call it), but it would be nice of TS could read such drive settings. Right now end-users have to copy the files somewhere else, like onto their "c" drive, which isnt backed up. Does this make sense?

One last comment i wanted to make, I suggest that for the TS import feature, allow it to show the file date and attributes instead of just names.

It would make it easier to know if theres a group of files to import. For instance, I created a bunch of images on Monday and want to select and import those files with Mondays date, not by name which is hard to memorize with 30 plus files at a time, etc.
